I got a Seiko chromatic tuner (ST 747) so I could do alternate tunings really fast. It's got a screen needle (not lights), and the readout tells you if you're high or low of the note you want, and how many percent off you are. The needle's good because as you're turning the peg you can see how fast you're zeroing in on the note. I use the tuner's mic because I play acoustic, but it's got jacks for electric. For a cheap tuner (<$30), it works pretty well, and doesn't get confused about the note very often.

I heard about it in Acoustic Guitar magazine - Seiko runs a big ad inside the front cover every month - which proves that however much I'd like to think otherwise, I too am susceptible to demon advertising.
