I was looking a the new 24,32, and 40 channels Onyx mixers. They seem really nice, but way over priced.

The Onyx 2480 is $3999.00 - thats what I'd call crazy. The Onyx 1640 is only $1200.00. I would expect the 2480 to come in at $1995.00 not 4k. The Onyx 3480 is $4799.00. Once again Mackie has over priced its products. I have a felling they will be forced to some down on the price.

Actually, the bigger Onyx boards are priced in line with other boards of similar capabilities. The reason they are so much more expensive is that they add a ton more than just a few more channels. For example, the 2480 -- it has 24 channels of Onyx preamps (instead of 1640's 16), 8 busses (1640 has 4), 8 aux sends (1640 has 6), 8 aux returns (1640 has 4), seperate faders and eq on each aux return (1640 has level knobs only), etc. etc.

The extra features may or may not be something you use, but they are great when you need them.

If you don't need the extra features but you want the excellent Onyx preamps, you can always use two 1640s side by side. I'm using a 1640 combined with a 1620, both with Firewire interfaces for live recording with 32 channels and it rocks.

I just picked up a 1640 and used it for the first time tonight at a gig. Pretty smooth - it kicked ass as a live mixer.

Looks like they are shooting for the Crest HP8/Soundcraft G8B area with those mixers.

Does that mean the Mackie 24/8 and 24/8 will be discontenued? I wonder if they will offer a meter bridge soon.

Can you install a firewire card in the 32 channel and send 32 channels of audio to your computer?

There isn't even any info on the Mackie web site about these mixers yet, so at this point it's a bit hard to know all the info. The larger Onyx mixers are obviously aimed at live mixing, so it wouldn't surprise me if the firewire capabilities will be left off.

The prices don't seem outrageous at all, pretty much in line with what you'd expect. Look at all the extra features as opposed to the 1640, this is not just $500 worth of extra features. These mixers are in the same range as the small Midas mixers, but with a lot more features.

They certainly look like they could make good studio mixers as well as live mixers.

Hey laptoppop,

I am curious if you can couple these mixers? Someone at GC said they didn't think so, but I wanted to talk to someone who is using them. It seems that with the Firewire capabilities you could slave one to the other.

You could route the main outs of one to the stereo channels of the other and sum them together.

How many Tracks simultaniously?

How Many tracks can you record simultaniously on the 1640 to your computer?

Is it 16? and if I had two 1640, could I record 32 tracks all at the same time?

For $2400 for two boards, thats alot better than what I'm using right now. I record through a Behringer MX3282, out the 8 sub-group outs into my Aardvard Pro Q10. Thats only 8 tracks all at the same time onto 8 separate tracks.

The firewire outputs of the Onyx mixers give 16 channels + the 2 main outs into the computer and 2 returns from the computer.

If you daisy-chain one Onyx mixer into another, everything doubles -- 32 channels in plus the 4 main outs, with 4 returns from the computer.

-BUT-

You gotta make sure the computer you are running into can handle all those channels. My laptop can only handle about 20 channels at once. My desktop can handle all the channels easily.

I know this is an old topic BUT...

Also, none of those larger mixers offer firewire capability. Guess I will have to buy another Onyx 1640 if I want to record 32 channels simultaneously.

Oh Honey....
