Seeking guitar software suggestions
  1. Guitar effects and amp modeling
  2. Backing tracks/rhythm section accompaniment and sequencing
  3. Low/no latency monitoring (may include PC hardware interface)
  4. Multi-track recording from field composition to live to studio work

    also down the road

  5. Mix down and effects
  6. Mastering
What software is good/best for these different functions? As for rhythm sequencing, I'd like something that sounds natural, not digital/fake.

So far I am going with an PC laptop (XP/Vista ready) for a DAW and I a brand new beginner at recording software. For music tone/functionality, I definitely prefer quality over economy, but my pocketbook is tight so I will likely need to try out demo's first. So I'd like suggestions with an eye toward future upgrades toward more power and functionality. And I'd like to stay with PC not Mac if possible.

BTY, isn't Pro Tools what the pro's tend to use? But there seems to be no Pro Tools forum,,, why not?
 
Well Pro Tools is a sequencer...that'd be the basis of your PC recording, a sequencer. The other thing you need is an interface: a go-between connnecting your guitars/mics/keyboards. Now many soundcards come bundled with much of the software you mentioned, but synthesisers and modellers are always going to sound 'fake' compared to real guitars.

Rhythm sections are doable, thanks to a lethora of free software available. Virtual bass and Wav. loops are available as well as virtual drums. The quality of these depends on the source, but there are some great freebies.

Maybe you could tell us what kind of music youre trying to put together?
 
I am a guitarist looking for s/w bass and drum accompaniment (not guitar/other accompaniment).

I am into the blues and classic rock, some pop and hard rock too. I'm sort of centered around classic rock.

Question
What sequencer/studio music recording S/W is recommended for being perhaps intermediate, user friendly and upgradeable toward more professional stuff as the need may (or may not) arise?

Guitar/amp effects i just use cubase and download any VST instroments as needed. (well truthfully i never use it as an "amp modeler") but i heard you can.

backing tracks i like using fruity loops (yes it sounds digital but you can get a natural sound, or get guitar pro 5 and export the midi to whatever program you want. (i use both)

multi track recording i use cubase or audacity (free)

cubase can also be used for mix down and effects

and also I like using goldwave for extra effects

I also use cubase. SE3 is a good sequencer and with the VB 1 and LM 7 midi bass and drums, you'll have a backing in no time. Of course its all digital triggering of pre recorded smaples, you might find it doesnt flow so well. But it should definetely be enough to get you started. Also, maybe invest in Guitar rig, Amplitude or Line 6 modelling plug ins for your DI guitar sound.
 
Got the 80 dollar version of amplitube. Not bad for keeping it simple. Some good sounds tht you can filter through other software effects.
