I don't think I have ever gotten so much conflicting information about how to do this.
1. I will record into my Roland VS-880
2. I would like to go digitally from my Roland to my PC (currently with SB Live Value with no daughter board) Will upgrade to possibly HoonTech?
3. I will edit waves in Cool Edit.
4. I will record digitally from the PC to Tascam CDRW-5000.

First I was told by Creative that there would be a daughter board available for the Live Value...never happened.
Then I was told by the local computer/ music experts that, "you can just plug your Tascam right into that S/PDIF out jack in the sound card...not!
Then I was told to just get a midi man break out box, 'cause you can't just plug direct from the sound card. Then I was told 'by Tascam" to purchase a "PCI-822 interface card" but they didn't know where I could get the cables, then I was told by someone in the soundcard forum to just run out to my local "Radio Shack"(who by the way have no idea what S/PDIF is) and buy the right cable and just plug in direct! Yep!!! It's gone full circle. Fortunately I have not taken any action yet or I would have a boxfull of probably useless crap by now.
Surely there must be some one out there using this setup who could tell me exactally what cables to buy. where to buy them and which HoonTech (or other card) will best accomplish this??

1) You need to get a soundcard with a spdif IN and OUT.

2) It doesn't have to be the Tascam PCI-822 soundcard.

3) The cable they couldn't locate was a TDIF cable. But you don't need a TDIF, you need a SPDIF. :) BTW, you can get them @ Cable Up (if you actually did need a TDIF cable).

4) Any of you pro audio stores would have SPDIF cables.

Quick question... Which device are you going to track with? The Roland or the PC?

I don't want to give you the wrong advice, so let me know.

Also, you might want to put this thread in a different forum, because a lot of the people at this site don't come into the Tascam section.

Try...

Computer Recording and Soundcards

or

Newbies

I am sure that we will be able to give you more than enough information.

p.s. I think you really should repost this thread into one of those 2 previously mentioned forums.

THANK YOU>>>>SPINSTERWUN!!!!!

Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Spinster.. I will be tracking with the Roland. As for the cables. Having never seen what the cables are supposed to look like...how will I know which one is correct?
I can give specific info for the Roland and the Tascam as far as what exact plug I should have for they are listed in the manuals. I need the digital coxial connection on the out of the Roland....should I look for a soundcard that has a Digital coxial SPDIF in?? or can I get a cable with different plugs on each end? Now on the the Tascam I can use the digital coaxial...that was how I had been working up to now...just going directly from the Roland to the Tascam. I only recently discovered the power of wav editing....yeah I know I'm slow... Anyway I only have one cable for that purpose and at $65, I'm not eager to run out get an array of cables till I know what I need. If I choose to use only digital coxial all the way around, will I be able to get a sound card with digital coxial I/O's ? Do you know if the Hoontech cards will fill the bill?
I truly appreciate the response. It is nearly impossible to find anyone around here with the expertise to answer even the simplest of questions. I did post in the sound card section but the one response I recieved didn't really answer my question. Plus I don't know how to post in multiple areas. Sorry I have so many questions but they have been stacking up for a long time.

Thanks again and I wil continue to read the posts...I have learned a lot there and already have turned on many friends here to this site...they too are hungry for answers.

What's up Bill.

1) SPDIF cables look just like RCA cables, but on the inside they are different (if you need more info on that, I'll post a site with basic info, i.e. the difference between SPDIF and RCA).

Here's also a glossary ot terms

2) Yes, a soundcard with a SPDIF IN and OUT. I know the Tascam PCI-822 has SPDIF INS and OUTS. I think the Delta 66 does also.

3) I don't know about the Hoontech? I'm not familiar with that product.

4) Try not to double post. ;)

5) Next time try to post in the Newbies Section (most people don't come into this (Tascam) forum.

peace, I'll talk to you soon...

p.s. You should check out Sound Forge 5.0 by Sonic Foundry. It is GREAT for editing and mastering.
