Taking the slow road
so i'm thinking of getting another set to switch to for a second opinion.

all i have is my old stereo for checking, and a pair of very nice BX5 no sub, so should i get a new pair w/ a sub, or some 10" or 8" and what's good for bass reproduction down to the low lows? :D :D

it's been a while since i searched...

we've talked about those m-audios in the past--they're definitely good for the money......but as i've said before, my mix translation, especially in the low end, improved dramatically when i upgraded to Event ASP8's. low end for DAYS in those things.

certainly you can add a sub to the BX5's and get better low end response. but i think you'd find an overall improvement with a step up (or two) in monitors.

honestly, though, unless you're prepared to spend around $1000-1200 on a set of monitors, you might as well just add a sub and be done with it. i don't think you'll see much of an improvement moving from the BX5's to a set of $600 monitors.

cheers,
wade

i'd go with roadkill...trying a sub seems easiest.(and cheapest).

the BX5 I had for a weekend, with a sub added, were a totally different league of sound. you not only add the low's of the sub, but your also removing the low freq's from the 5" driver. So the 5" is freed up to concentrate on the upper mid's; the clarity I then heard was very nice.
with a nice tight bass subwoofer, 8", it was really an astounding sonic change.

however..a small set and a full size pair, like the ASP8, is a strong setup.

but then there's those assholes who've supposedly made gold records on auratones and radio shack optimus 7's? hahaa

About a year ago, I was also having trouble getting the low end right with my BX5s. I added the matching SBX sub--problem solved. Cool's right about the overall sonic change, at least in my room. The BX5s sound much better now that they're not struggling to deal with the low freqs, and the SBX has a great bass management system that allowed me to integrate them so that the crossover is seamless. My mixes are now translating very well, and the sound in my studio is simply kick-ars.

I paid $199 for my SBX (new), and although M-Audio has replaced it with a newer model, I sometimes see it for sale used or new in roughly the same price range. I've read great things about the Events, but adding an SBX sub is certainly another good option, IMHO.

Good luck,
J.
