second hand studio monitor value

so every once an a while I browse around for some second hand studio monitors on gumtree.com. now im from perth where everything is expensive, but these things hold their value really well and I was wondering why? e.g. pair of krk 5" rockits going for 345 instead of 400 new.

also whats the lifespan of a set of monitors?

Lifespan is dependent on the user
As far as holding value - people ask all kinds of crazy prices, but rarely get what they ask for. Just make an offer if it is something you are interested in.

Pretty sure 99.5% of people here have no idea what gumtree.com is.... place ain't packed with Aussies..

Just because someone puts a price on something doesn't mean that's what they'll sell it for, or that's its real value.

In terms of the Rokkits, I can find them in Sydney for $389 new, so in a choice between that an $345 I'd pay the extra for warranty, service etc... $250 and I'd be thinking about second hand.

Monitors last a very very long time, so long as they're not abused. The more likely scenario would be that you'll realise you need bigger ones, rather than wearing a particular set out.

I am in Freo, and scan Gumtree every day, to keep the US crew in the loop, Gumtree is like Craigslist.

Some of the prices gear is listed on Gumtree is a joke, other things turn up at fair or even cheap prices, you need to do homework, know what the gear can be bought for new and what it sells for second hand.

If you are looking at Rockets 5", look on Ebay, a new pair from retailer sellers Limited Edition (they are white not black) for $389 delivered, good price for Oz.

lol a little off topic, but i was almost going to say its like craigslist... but it felt dirty since... well we all know what craigslist is well know for.

yeah i thought that was it with the prices. In terms of abuse, would that be someone playing it too loud or using it for the wrong purpose (live digital guitar?)

"Abuse" to me isn't so much a gradual effect as subjecting them to events in which something flat-out breaks, e.g. dropping one and cracking the enclosure, sticking a finger through a cone, subjecting them to a flood, or playing sufficiently loud to blow the tweeter.

Aside from abuse, the lifespan would presumably be limited by deterioration of electrolytic capacitors. That doesn't actually kill the monitors: you can restore them by replacing the caps. That isn't an insignificant undertaking, but it isn't enormous either.

The lifespan of the capacitors depends on some variables - like temperature and what sort of capacitors went in there in the first place. Careful people figure everything should be recapped in 15 years, though there are obviously plenty of users (the vast majority, I think) who cheerfully use considerably older items without doing anything.
