mixmkr - sorry about the deletion bro.. I promise not to delete this one.. I think you can only do that for the first few hours anyway.. I know that you know I appreciate the comments! :D you didnt mention if the remix was any better.. I'll take that as a possible maybe! "this song has all the faults you had when you first started posting here.. low vocals, disconjuncted parts, ... " It's nice to know the new gear and experience is finally starting to pay off! :D

jake-owa - I agree with you about the bass drum, and others have mentioned it too.. I put up a remix with louder vocals. thanks for the ears..

Stratomeister - hey Strat, you are correct... the beginning intro was some 'EBow gone sour' type sound! :D I thought it sounded odd enough, so I left it.. I really love that thing because you dont have to be good to use it.. I just keep messing with gain and tone settings.. I'm not sure which mix you heard because I put up a remix with louder vocals.. As far as what makes me think of drastic changes/mood swings, it's probably because I usually write and record at the same time.. The second I come up with a riff, I start recording.. I guess I have a lot of mood swings, and if I come back to a song a day or so later, I sometimes add a part that reflects my current mood.. If you notice, most of my songs sound very similar.. The L1 seems to be a cool thing, but it's added even more questions about mixing.. It's especially difficult because I don't record with the computer.. I just rip the mix from a CD.. Anyway, thanks for the comments! Did the file say (ver.2?)

Kramer - hey Kramerrtory, I have serious problems mixing vocals.. That's why I'm going to stop complaining about other peoples... How can I even tell people to lower the vocals, when I place mine under the snare drum! Your last tune had some damn serious vocal! You should post more.. thanks for the ears from the Kramertorium! :D

Guernica - hey Mike, sorry about the chaos! Let me explain..(excuses and violins begin) I mixed that tune 10 minutes after I sang it.. My ears were/are bleeding.. I started adding effects like crazy, and in the end I decided to go with the original partially saturated vocal.. I was soo shot that I mixed the wrong ones without even realizing it.. (burnt) I quickly switched the virtual track to the original and Presto! I was left with the pointed and harsh, mid range sounding vocal that you hear in this mix.. :D It actually pisses me off very much because I hear it too.. I wasn't sure, but now it's official.. I deleted the thread and put up the mix that should have been there first. I think the problem is that I don't know how it's supposed to sound.. I try to rarely ever solo my voice because it is absolutely horrid sounding!! It is really making me want to do more instrumental stuff.. Once again we see a situation where you are in posession of a mix that I want destroyed! :D LMfAO!!! sometimes I really do laugh out loud!! Seriously though, I appreciate the ears brother.. I will not stop until I nail these problems.. (or I do nothing but instrumentals) I'm not going to use the Digitech Vocal processor on the next song, and I will see if that makes a difference.. You have to be able to get a decent vocal sound out of an SM58.. There are plenty of commercial recordings that have used that mic.. thanks! BTW, the vibe of this song makes me nervous too! :)

Toki 987 - that hot tube smell was my brain frying! :D thanks for dropping a comment man!

Triple M - hey Trip, I use a Roland TD-8 sound module.. I usually play the drums on pads, but I am slowly starting to learn how to program.... very slowly.. The outro was a drum machine pattern.. Your always there to drop some feedback, and that is really appreciated man..

Cranky One - I agree about the bass drum.. I'm still searching for my main drum sound.. Any suggestions you have for vocal sound or drum sound would be appreciated.. Your sound is at the top of the game! thanks! What's a bridge? :D

David - thanks for thinking there is some improvement.. You may just be being nice, but I'll take it! :D

jcmm - hey Joel, where you going with that gun in your hands? :D I'm all effects man.. the beginning was a Boss PS-5 pitch shifter/Wammy pedal.. It is a crucial crutch for me.. Dude, if your ever on L.I., I will burn the fattest bone you have ever seen in your life! thanks for always checking in man! I'd like to hear some of your music.. I don't think you ever posted?

muzeman - hey Pete, good to see you man.. sorry you had to hear this one so close to the holiday! :D I have some serious mix problems, and it's starting to frustrate me very much.. Where is your Christmas tune?! thanks Pete, best to you and your family..

Pinky - I appreciate the detailed commentary man.. You are dead on with the negative comments.. I just used the synth bass to add some beef.. I will start doing better real bass again.. I just have been in synth mode lately.. I also agree about the annoying bass drum.. Your comments will be kept in mind on the next one.. I appreciate that man!

SLuiCe - hey Tom, if your comments were first, this thread would have also been deleted! :) I love E.Q. talk! I think from now on, I will p.m. certain people and have them listen before I post it.. It's pissing me off! It has got to be possible to get a decent vocal sound with an SM58.. I really want to nail these vocal problems I seem to always have.. My main reason for posting songs in the clinic, is to get them where they sound good to non-musician people that hear them.. When I send someone an mp3, I want it to sound good.. People like you and Mike, participant, mix, Cranky, Triple etc, are helping me do that.. Although it would appear that I am a slow learner.. This clinic needs to stay critical.. I'm glad you gave me specific e.q suggestions.. I am still a retard when it comes to e.q.ing, but I will keep at it, or just record instrumentals from here on out.. I'll post the lyrics in a seperate post, but keep in mind that my lyrics are usually uncreative and off the top of my head.. Thanks for the help Tomij!

lyrics..

b.u.d. (by unpopular demand)

standing high on the fence, tempting to jump off,
landing, upon my head, not really a big loss,
I think that you'll know it when it starts raining indoors,
and you can't change it, inside it's raining,
I'm tired of waiting, inside it's raining...

I'm tired and hungry, inside it's raining..

Welcome to the freak show back by popular demand,
someone here will help you, showing fools will understand,
and good pot is o.k. if you have enough to share,
if you ain't got nothing honey, there's plenty of good pot there...

Welcome to the freak show, it's a place where you can vent,
no one here will judge you, and they tell you your the best,
and yes, pot is o.k. if you have enough to share,
if you ain't got nothing baby, there's plenty of good pot there..

Heh...the lyrics aren't about the bbs are they? :D

There's one suggestion I might make without actual watching you track vocals, and you may already be doing it....but...

Make sure you are locking your body into a still position....upright and facing straight forward. Listening to some of your tracks it sounds like maybe sometimes you're leaning back like 5-6 inches. This makes a huge difference both in volume (of course) but also in proximity effect....tone, warmth, presence. You probably know this already but it's the only thing I can think, and maybe it will help someone who doesn't. But if you try to maintain a consistant distance from the mic, you'll have less fader riding to do in the mix.
You once reminded me yourself that some great albums were done with 58's...Pantera, etc.
And as far as the EQ thing goes...hehe, it was your constant nagging about my mids that got me paying more attention to those details, so I owe you for that. :D

This mix is not bad though man...it's just an unorthodox recording (it's got an extra fat ass), so it requires a little extra effort methinks. Should be well worth it!

I'm not going to use the Digitech Vocal processor on the next song, and I will see if that makes a difference..

......I think that might be a nice thing to try. After hearing alot of your songs, it seems i can consistently hear the effects that youre using. ....just a thought..... try limiting yourself to just whats available on the 788. It might strike you as thin..... but, maybe not..... anyway,......just for kicks.

......are you still working on the tune that you are writing around vocs?

damn, this BIG sounding!!! (but what's new ):D it seem's your sound keep's getting bigger though!!! those git's will knock you down!!!!! SCHWEEEEET!! man, from about 00:52 through 1:24 , the drum's get buried ?? prolly a preference thing:rolleyes: i really like to hear the snare. anyway, i'm a broken record!!! i love your stuff!!! another one for the sam file's!!

thank's man!

peace

rick

yeah./. I've been listening to this a fair amount.. much better now that the vocals are up. I hate giving suggestions as far as turn up 330 Htz and backoff the jackoff...etcc... That's just useless tribble to me. I turn knobs if they need turning...

Your singing is really pretty cool. It has the telephone effect all the time, but cuts thru reallly well ij...

the problem with your stuff is that I listen to it too much rather than record my own crap...

so... wadda ya think...another short year you'll have another 20 more at nowhere. ya only got 20 there now... SLACKER!!

holy detuned music batman!

sounds very cool. i LOVE the ebow stuff you do. it's so expressive and the phrasing is so very spot on. reaching for words to describe but i really enjoy listening to your e-bow solos. i didn't even know what one was before listening to you.

first thing i noticed is that L1 gave you some volume! This is louder than what i've heard from you in the past so that was a good purchase. gotta remember to get one of those.

second thing i noticed was the very cool bow work.

third thing, fucking crunchy munchy rythm guitars. i gotta admit i always download your songs looking forward to the rythm guitar. it's like ordering a 65 ounce steak.

fourth, you detuned even the snare drum!

fifth, the bass drum is a little 'clicky', but i'm not sure where there is room on the bottom for it

so how do you like playing that tennis racket for a snare drum? kind of fun isn't it? you can play as many rimshots as you want and not worry about breaking a stick! i've had the same pair of sticks for the last five months!

I can't tell if I've just been called "useless," "jackoff," or "knob." :)But if it's so useless why can't we hear the vocals? Crawdad gave me some "backoff the jackoff" advice that I think helped a lot a while back. But to each his own I guess.

backoff the jackoff!

Guernica - hey G spot, I'm wondering if that digitech vocal processor is a piece of garbage.. yeah man, I started a new song and my main focus is on the vocals.. I am going to go straight from my 58, into a Blue Tube pre, and only use the effects from the 788.. I finished most of the music last night, and maybe tomorrow I'll take a swipe at the vocal.. The song is a gothic version of 'I feel good' by James Brown. :) You probably can guess what I did to it.. thanks for sticking with me Mike!

fenderkickinhood - hey fenderbender, your right.. the levels are off the chain.. The drums were too loud on the last tune, so I was a bit paranoid about this one.. I also usually like to hear the drums clearly.. Maybe it's our Metal roots! :) thanks for getting in there bro!

mixmkr - man that had me rolling! 'backoff the jackoff' :D Tis the story of my life.. Anyway, I'm definitely doing something wrong.. I didnt use the telephone effects for this one, but it still sounds that way.. I'm doing some experimenting, and I'll probably post a James Brown cover by the weekend.. If I can't nail these vocal problems, I will just stick with instrumentals.. I really do need the specific e.q. advice.. just ask any woman I have been with recently, and she'll say 'your turning the wrong knobs!' :D thanks for the help, and more important, the laughs!

erichenryus - yeah man I love that snare.. I wish I could afford to get the rest of them.. What a difference.. For the longest time I had to use a PD-5 for a snare.. It seemed like such a waste.. It really is almost like a real snare.. As far as the EBOw, I love that thing too! :D It really is a crutch for me, but a man with a limp needs a crutch! I hope I can nail my mix problems so I can focus on content rather than sound.. thanks for dropping some comments man..

SLuiCe - I sent you a p.m...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guys, I'm going to let this thread go to make room for the new one that's coming.. a mutilated gothic version of I feel good by James Brown.. Hopefully the sonics will be better.. Any more thoughts about this tune could be sent through p.m.'s.. thanks for the continued help.. It may seem like your wasting your time offering me advice because I make the same mistakes over and over, but it's only because I am a little slow.. :)

Thank you, and I hope everyone has a Great Christmas!

Sam, I tried to respond...your box is full bud. Lemme know when it's clear....

Mix, I just want you to know I was trying to be funny...I know you love a good debate. I've read some of your gear posts :)

I know I'm gonna like it but I'm so crazy busy right now; it'll probably be Saturday 'till i have time to listen to anything. So I downloaded it and I'm posting so I can find the thread easily. Next week when you think the thread has died away I'm gonna bring it right back to the front. :D

Merry Christmas Sam!

I kinda sensed that, but for a moment, sometimes the written internet word can be confusing...I'll admit. So...I appreciate your last comments.

But seriously...I never look at the numbers on the EQ knobs and stuff like that. I just always turn them until I hear something that sounds like improvement. For some, I can see how it can be helpful. I already know where the freqs are that cause mud, sizzle, boings, zips, crunch... at least to a degree that reading them off a knob won't assist me. Offering advice to other people, I can see now that it would/could be helpful...especially if you try it yourself, then suggest it to the author.

anywazz...Slucie... why don't you just go fuck yourself anyway?? I never debate shit, cause I am always right... right Sam? Sam?... Sam?.......:(

Vox much better...

Prefacing further comments by saying: this song kicks butt... this is definitely the caliber of stuff I burn to CD (it will make it to the next one)... and "burning something" seems to fit right in with the mood ;)

Ok... You know, it's not so much the "too much lows" stuff I'm reading in this thread... it just sounds like some major scoopage around 900Hz (the heavy part)... and some undefined lows on guitar/bass... IMO it's not a "build up" of low freq. stuff. Whens that Mesa Boogie coming again, Sam? Still saving? Do you have even a cabinet to play thru now? If so, I highly suggest giving the J-Station-->Amp-->mic thing a shot.

The thing that's cool is you can get killer tone with much less Amp noise... just set the amp clean, jack in some distortion, jack around with the mic, and jack out to a recorder. Jack-off later :D

BTW Jack Ortman would be proud; & I don't know Jack about this sht! :D ;)

(Again BTW--I PM'ed sam about it--but doesn't anyone else, who's familiar with Incubus' stuff, think the outro has similar changes to Incubus' stuff? I love Incubus. That outro is beautiful).

If I ever make an animated movie about whales, I'm getting you to do the soundtrack. I like all the haunting passages in your stuff.

The reverb snap on the kick was a little harsh IMO.

I've kinda' gotten into the habit of waiting to listen to your tunes until most of the deletions and the first 3 mixes are out of the way. I respect that about you, actually...you actually listen to what people say and try to improve your mixes. Nothing pisses me off more than when somebody posts a tune and then argues with the feedback. Okay, maybe the whole middle east thing pisses me off more, but that's it.

I read part of the thread, and I saw you say that you DID NOT add a telephone/hyped mids effect to your vocal. If that's true (and I have no reason to think you're lieing), then there is definitely something weird going on. A 58 shouldn't sound like that unless there's some effect/EQ going on, or unless you're distorting the piss out of the vocal when you record it, and I doubt you're doing that.

Maybe I missed something in the thread that explains it, and I guess I've just gotten so used to hearing that sound on your voice that I've gotten used to it (read as "it does NOT sound bad"), but if it's not the sound you're going for, then something's getting lost in the transmission.

Great outro btw -

The tune and this thread deserve starz, and G has fallen down on the job...so here ya' go. But this doesn't mean we're friends or anything...(ass) :D :D :D

playing a pd-5 is like playing a basketball. the new tennis racket snares are definitely an evolution. i'm hoping to devolve back to a real snare drum soon.

forgot to mention. i love the outro. and you're the king of crunchy guitar imo.

Told ya' I'd get to it.

i really like the intro section, very calming............uh-oh..here comes the darkness...........Voice is more natural than what you usually use........it's nice to feel like I'm actually hearing you.................there's that huge layered sound you get..........very cool.........drums seem kind of held back for want of a better word................oooooo....cool outro.

I like this. Like all your tunes.....it shows great creativity. personally I'd like to hear the drums more involved in this one but other than that, I like it.

I'll be waiting on that James Brown cover!

In the meantime, I just gotta talk about whats exciting me about this--the tag section. That is some really cool shit there! Is that the e-bow that erichenryus mentioned? Whatever, its awesome and you have some serious mastery of that whole technique. That whole musical section is worthy of a song in itself.

I really don't feel qualified to give a critique of the song--its great but I don't know shit about this style of music. I do know that I thought that big fat electric rhythm was killer and that the vocal is --FINALLY--up where it should be. (I know, you just want to SHOOT my sorry ass for saying that at this point, but hearing you sing is a GOOD thing and it really satisfies my ear to be able to pick out the vocals and lyrics in a song).

When you say V-snare, do you mean Roland? You have a Roland electronic kit? Thats a very cool thing if you do.

Hey, don't mind me--I'm just rambling tonight. I sure did like that last section. If thats an e-bow, you may be holding the key to your musical future there. I've never heard anything so cool sounding. I know you have used it before on other things, but it stands so up front on that tag--its just very interesting stuff there Sam.
