So I am just getting into the recording game, and am looking for a good set of condensers or ribbon mics. I want them to be pretty versatile. looking to record overhead drums and guitar amps, as well as vocals. my budget is limited to about 200 per mic. I know with this budget I'm not likely to get the best quality. any help would be awesome!
Thanks!

Have a look at the MXL R40, I bought one because they were stupid cheap and they sound very good on guitar cabs, they have been replaced by R144 but some say they like the sound of the R40 better, they are still available here if you are in the USA.

I also have used one on an acoustic guitar and I like it a lot, I used it mainly as the figure 8 pattern is good for when you get a singing acoustic guitar player and they want to track both at the same time, the figure 8 pattern keeps the vocal out of the guitar mic.

200 what?

£200 is more than €200, quite a bit more than $200 and a lot more than ¥200.

You don't say where you are, so it's very difficult to help you without knowing what currency you are talking about.

£200 or €200 will buy you a lot more mic. than $200 or ¥200.

You can't go wrong with the Rode NT1-A condenser mic for vocals. You can get that for around 140 quid with the shock mount and pop shield included. I use the SM57 for miking up my guitar cab - it does the job. I bought it for 80 quid, though i saw it going for much less on ebay

:thumbs up: i've not tried the older R40 but have heard similar things, but i do quite like the R144. I also really like the Apex 205. i've still got mine stock, but the mods seem fairly simple and seem to open up the sound a bit. Although i've not tried it, i've heard good things about the new sE X1R as well.

When you get an sE x1R you can tell me how it does coz i fancy one of those too now.
I've got the rebranded apex 205 and i really like it too but only on some applications.

If your just starting out i'd reccomend dynamics and ldc and sdc rather than ribbons though.
Until you have done a lot of experimenting with mic position on instruments.
Ribbons are like a whole differant ball game. because of the way the diaphram interacts with spl's.

In my experience, with guitar miking a SM57 is a wonder and is about 100 bones.

If and when i do i'll let you know, but for £149 new it seems rude not too ;) Saying that, i'm in the market for an outboard stereo EQ atm so my mic investments are taking a back seat for now.

And yeah, my Apex 205 is actually the alctron hrm-8b, but it just seems easier to call it the Apex 205 as more people seem to know what that is :)
