Common Dreads

New member
I am a grade 12 student on a budget looking for a good large diaphragm condenser for around 350 Australian Dollars. I am intending on going to university to become a recording engineer and I need this mic for my portfolio. Other mics I am looking at are.

AKG Perception 420

and

Rode NT1A. (Although I have heard the NT1A can be rather shrill)

Any experience? suggestions? advice? Thanks guys.

If you wanted a Rode, and I do like rode mics, I would stretch for a NT2-A as the NT1 is fixed pattern. If you shop around I reckon you may get a NT2-A for the AU$350, if not try second hand.

You also should look at the Audio-technia mics, I am also a fan of these too, not the cheapest range but again look for secondhand in the better range maybe a 40 series.

There are also some other AKG's then the perception, like the C2000b and the C4000b again these would need to be second hand.

Where in OZ are you based?

Cheers
Alan.

I am from Queensland, The Darling Downs :) So you don't think that the sE is a good choice? where should I look for some of those second hand mics, Ebay?

Where in the Darling Downs?

Toowoomba? Dalby?

I'll have you know I'm the reigning Survivor Moola champion...

I'm assuming, of course, you've heard of Moola, cultural hub that it is... :D

And then there was the time, many, many years ago when I blew a fan belt in my Datsun 1600 about 20 miles east of Oakey and had to hitchhike into town and get a new one... many memories...

Mics... yes agree with Witz on the NT2 thingy, but good luck getting one in your budget. Ebay perhaps...

You might need to aim lower. Unfortunately I don't really know much about what else there is available. Is there an Allans in Toowoomba you could steal one from? Get to Brisbane much?

Unfortunately you'll be somewhat limited by what's actually available and, as you'll find out, a lot of the recommendations you'll get cost seriously more over here...

Check out the major online retailers and see what they have in stock that's in your price range...

Silly me, I did not see the se1000 in the heading, I don't know about the se1000 but it does get good reviews around the place. Is it multi pattern?

As you are in Darling Downs and I am in Fremantle the offer I was going to make about dropping into the studio to have a listen to a few mics is now a bit redundant.

I have bought quite a few mics on ebay, as long as you check out the sellers feedback you should be fine. I know some of the US visitors to this forum don't like ebay, but here in Oz it's really the only way to get good secondhand gear. I would stick in Oz sellers unless it's something special. I bought the following mics off ebay, plus lots of other goodies:

Audio Technica AT3525
Audio Technica AT2035
MXL V67
Rode NT1000

Cheers
Alan.

all tucked up in bed over the other side of the world, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Indeed, round about now the HR population seems to dramatically diminish...

How's the serenity!

Yer I'm in Dalby haha :) I bought the sE1000a off Ebay, got it for $160 so i figure if its not that great no big loss. If I decide to get something else I will probably go with an AKG or save up for the Rode NT-2.

That's the GAS spirit we like to see around here.

At least you're not trying to set up a whole studio of components for under $100...

I have friends up the road from you... about 10 minutes from the 'Bun pub towards Maclagan... you probably know him, he's the popular/only one man band entertainment for about a 200 km radius and has been for the last 20 years...

He's always trying to talk me into a guest spot at one of his regular appearances at the Dalby RSL, but given I live in Sydney, this is somewhat problematic...

What's his name? It might ring some bells. If ya come to dalbs I'll watch and you can give me a master class on recording some stuff haha. When the microphone gets here (from great Britain) I'll post back on here to tell you guys how it goes. Thanks for all the advice.

Hey I'm up now! what your excuse? :D

ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz

Not really, I never sleep just ask the wife, always telling me off for not resting. Knocked off from the day job, then was at the studio until 10pm, then got home and watched the Tour de France until midnight, up for the day job again at 6am, just a normal day really.

I just am not always on line.

Hay Common Dreads, let us know what you think of the Se1000a

Yup same here .....no rest for the weary!
At least I don't work for someone else. I have my own businesses, and on a rare once a month or so occasion..... I can sleep in or run around in my undies drinking coffee all morning.

yeah well... I'm 16 and... give drum lessons for an occupation... Yeah... Big studio owners thinking they own the place ;)
