I want to buy some drum overheads but I can't make up my mind on what pair to get. I've read nothing but good things about the SM81's but recently been considering the SE electronics SE3 because of a review on mixonline. The SM81 and SE3 are around the same price range so I wanted to know if anyone has any opinions on the SE3. I don't want anything more than $700, the price of the pair of 81's. Is the SE3 worth buying or should I just go for the SM81?

Actually the SE3 is a nice sounding mic with great detail and does a good job on acoustic sources.

SE electronics makes really nice sounding mics. I would go with the SE3, haven't used it myself but have used some of thier other mics and wa impressed.

The SM81s would probably hold their value better.

That said, I love my Josephson C42s, and you can get them for $800 a pair.

I've been looking at the SE3 as standby mics when I've run out of some of my more expensive ones. After reading your post I thought I'd look at the SM81 but they are nearly 3 times the price of the SE3 in the UK. At Digital Village.... £475 (roughly $855) for a SM81 and £349 (roughly $628) for a matched PAIR of SE3's.

I just found out the price os a single SE3 over here, £120 (roughly $216). That's nearly a quarter of the price of the SM81 here in the UK. I can't believe how cheap some of the gear is over in the states and how much we get overcharged here.
