Today, while hitting yard sales with the wife, i scored a pioneer rt-707 reel to reel 4 track. I got this machine aswell as an old panosonic rs 780s 2 track for a big 15.oo. i'm having the 707 cleaned and fully checked out by a guy. I'm really wanting to incorporate this into my home studio, which is pc based using Sonar 8.5 pro, but how do i do this. My thought is that with this machine i can get that warm analog sound that i'm craving but i'm not sure how to go about it. Lukily for me! a good friend of mine is a home studio guy from the old day's and can teach me all i neeed to know about recording to tape but he knows nothing about digital gear so if you guy's could give me some direction that would be most helpful.

The 707 is a great consumer level open reel deck. It records at 3 3/4 and 7 1/2 inches per second. You would be using it mostly for mixing down to two channel stereo and sending back to the PC as the 707 is a 1/4 track (each channel only takes up about 1/4 of the tape width, L + R for 2 channels in each direction) and wouldn't quite be ideal for mastering to, although nobody is saying it can't be done, just not ideal. I'm not familiar with the RS780 in the least bit so don't know what to tell you on that one.

There is a vast amount of information, just in this forum alone, about recording and handling tape. The best advice I could give is to research the threads in here. If there is something specific to the decks you have questions about, fire away!

The 707 is a fantastic deck! Also its one of the best looking decks ever made!

Thanks for the info. want to make sure i understand what your saying. i should record my tracks, edit, mix and so forth on my daw and then mix down to two tracks and record that to the 707 and then re ord back to daw. Am i chasing my tail or what. lol
