I know that there are several threads about a problem with multiple cards. My head starts hurting when I see people discussing IRQ's and such....I just would like to know this. Can SB Live and Delta 66 co-exist using Sonar in Win 98 SE? Or does having two soundcards require going to XP?

I had Delta 66 installed and working fine. I installed an SB Live to get access to Soundfont stuff. After install of SB Live, Sonar does not recognize the Delta. If I disable the SB Live in Device Manager the Delta magically reappears in Sonar.

Does this have to do with WDM drivers? I am perplexed. And being ignorant of digital recording and being perplexed is dangerous, amigo.

Any thoughts?

Yes they can. Many people do this, myself included. It has nothing to do with WDM drivers. It does have to do with things like IRQs.

Hi Don
I have the same set up.
A fella called Skydye does too, and when I found out he did I went groveling to his feet with my problem.
He told me, which I remember reading in the mAudio manuel, that Delta likes it's own IRQ.
I have a DSL connection too. The network card seems to bother Delta. He recommended that I move my Delta card as far away from the network card as I could. I switched everything around and everyone seems happy now.

Hope this helps you like it did me.
Thanks again Skydye.
Five months I wrestled with that problem.

Thanks guys. Like I said, this IRQ stuff makes my head hurt, but upon investigation my irq's are:

3: Delta
11: Soundblaster (currently disabled)

Why would the irq's be in conflict? I don't get it? What should I do to fix things?

TIA!

Hey Spacedye,

The only other "thing" showing up on irq 3 is "IRQ Holder for PCI Steering", which shows up on every irq related to a PCI device, I've noticed. That may be a big "DUH!", but interesting to me. is the PCI Steering a required thing?

(Crouching and covering head as if its getting ready to rain "idiot, idiot, idiot" bombs)

IRQ 3: Delta
IRQ 5: USB
IRQ 10: 3dfx card
IRQ 11: Soundblaster (disabled)

IRQ Holder for PCI Steering present in each IRQ.

Thanks for your help guys. Could this just be a simple matter of removing and reloading the Delta drivers? I read another post where it talks about if the SB Live is install FIRST then it doesn't "take over", so to speak. Hell, I don't know. That's why I come to you guys!

TIA

I doubt unloading and reloading the drivers will do any good; and it certainly won't get the Delta on another IRQ. Swapping slots is the easiest way to do that.

For the record, my SB Live is on IRQ 3 and the Delta, IRQ 5. IRQ 5 is also used by the USB controller, which some said was a no-no, but it has worked flawlessly for me for a year and a half now.

One thought -- did you disable the DOS emulation on the SB Live? This was recommended and seems to be important. It's useless unless you're going to play old DOS games anyway...

uninstall all soundcard programs, remove all the drivers for the sound cards. then remove the SBLive card completely from the computer. get the delta up and running, then install the SBLive again and see what happens. remember to keep them as far apart in the pci slots as possible. this may do the trick.
but as far as using the SBLive for midi, you need to enable it in the cakewalk program for that. i dont use midi at all in my music. i just use the SBLive card for the joystick gameport.
maybe give "Gidge", a BBS member, a yell about that. i think i remember him giving me a word or 2 about midi.

Thanks again for your help. Alchuck, where do you disable DOS Emulation on a SBLive?

I'll try messing around with different slots. Thanks!

right click on "my computer", left click on "properties",
select creative sblive card in device manager, you will find emulation there. double click emulation and you will see disable near the bottom.

Thanks SpaceDye!

BTW, I like your stuff! I especially thought your sound was "deep" and "clean". And that is a compliment. I hope I do as well on my recordings:-)

Thanks,

Don Lee (AKA Dono, just havent taken the time to log in again)

Spacedye,

Well, messing around with the slots hasn't produced any worthwhile results. And as for DOS emulation, I found no reference to that setting on my soundcard. I'm *pretty* computer-literate, so I don't *think* I'm missing anything.

So, the situation remains. Although my devices are on their own IRQ, I am unable to get SB Live and Delta 66 to co-exist in Win 98 using Sonar.

Any ideas other than what has been discussed?

TIA!

1st, thanks for the kind words about my tunes. much appreciated.
i am using delta 66 and SBLive value on WinMe. its a different driver than the one used for Win98. you may need to install the driver thats at the link ive attached. you can find the driver here. http://www.midiman.net/support/drivers/new/Deltawin9x_22.41.EXE
just to understand the actual problem-is it that your not getting the soundfonts from the sblive? or the fact that when sonar sees the sblive, it doesnt see the delta and vice-versa?

I haven't even missedwith Soundfonts YET. When the Sonar sees the SB Live it doesn't see the Delta, and vice-versa.

Thanks for the Ethan Winer link. I'll read the article tonight. Thanks for your help!

open sonar and go into "options", then "audio", then "input monitoring" does it list both sound cards?

No, it does NOT list both sound cards if I have the SoundBlaster enabled.

Thanks, Dono

Hey SpaceDye,

Yes, I ran the profiler....when the SB Live is enabled it is the only sound card to show up. But of course, when the SB Live is disabled, the Delta shows up. I'm perplexed. But then, that's an easy state for me to be in:-)

What I haven't tried is something I saw in another post on another thread....that is, to zero out and then install the SB Live, followed by the Delta. I'll see what happens then. When I installed the SB Live originally the Delta was already installed. Thanks for your reply! I appreciate your help!
