i know this should be a question for the newbie sectoin but i thought you guys would have better input on the subject.

are samson mics any good? (all relative to thier price) are there any other mics in the sam price range that would be better

i will be using it for indie/power pop vocals.
(all this wil the samson co3 in mind)

thanks :)

I have a Samson CL7. It compares favorably to a Shure KMS32 for one third of the price.

I have no experience with the C03, but it's probably a good value for the money.

hahahaha,

But you know what. He's right.

I used the CO1 (i think it's called).....what a bunch of crap!

Save up and get a decent mic. For Vox my favorite in the 'budget' range is the Se 2200A. Worth that little bit more than the samson ones, and a MASSIVE difference.

Samson Microphones

Yea, I'm not a big fan of the Samson mic's either. Although if you really have to go that cheap, a better value would be one of the cheap Marshall's or something (MXL 990 for example). It's not a great vocal mic, but with a good tube pre it works well with acoustic guitars. I do agree though, if you are going for a good all around mic you are going to have to shell out a little more change.

erm okay :(
nothings cheap these days :p i have heard that the studioprojects are quite good?

Yes, get a Studio Projects B1 and you'll have a MUCH quieter (less hissy) very usable mic for $99.00. I had the Samson CO1. The background hiss is VERY noticeable on quiet passages, or plain voice-over (23db self-noise).

The Studio Projects B1 has a very low self-noise (12db) and it's very nice on many difference sources.

Another one to consider would be the CAD 177 or CAD 179.

I have a Rode NT1A for sale....very clean mic....$145 shipped

nice try.. but ive been warned that secodn hand condensors are troublesome... and getting it form the usa.. it would be mangled by the time it got into the uk :)

I wasent aware that u live in the Uk....but as far as second hand mics being a problem hmmm i dunno man guess thats a english thing...

haha.. yeah well i would like to buy my first proper mic brand new.. just so when its not working i know i can take it back :)

I'm in ireland and buy almost everything from the US because the exchange rate and prices are so favourable. I've never had one thing damaged or go missing and I'm talking hundreds of parcels.

You should be able to get an SP B1 or MXL 990 for less than that C03 on ebay

I have a C01, it's a fine mic, a little noisy, but worth the price. Workes well for drum overheads (2 of em) if you want a large stereo spread since it's supercardiod. Also has worked well on vocals for me. The noise isn't an issue if you are talking right into it.

Haven't compared it to much in it's price range, but has compared favorably to a Rode NT1. I've never had a desire for another cheap mic, it's good enough to warrant taking some time to save up for a high end mic next.

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents here... I have been using Samson CO2s as drum overheads for the past year and a half (or two?) and couldn't be happier with them. $119 for a pair of mics that sound as good if not better than Rode NT5s? Can't beat that. Haven't dealt with any other Samson mics but I highly recommend the CO2 pair.

hmmn mixed opinions are confusing :)
erm how much is the 23db self noise in simple terms

I am not sure why you mention C02 when the question is about C03??? They are two ABSOLUTELY different animals

well the whole post is about samson mics so its fine.. allow it :)

Well, C01 and C03 although look like LD, actually have cheap 19mm electret capsules inside. The aforementioned noise is coming from the capsule, which does not suggest its very good quality. The C03 in order to get multipattern has two capsules. The large distance between them creates a large phase shift, compare to "real" double sided capsule.

The inside of the grill is lined with a piece of foam, which besides of sound deterioration, creates long term problems. In a few years the foam will begin deteriorating, thus leaving debries stuck on the diaphragm, and the thing will become unusable.

I don't see and don't understand how possibly these could be called OK mics, unless you are looking for some weirdo sound effect and need some "analog tape" background noise.
As I wrote before--stay away. For the money you could get muuuch better deal.

okay i get it now.. i will stay away. thanks for clearing that up. i could cope with some noise but if its not built to last then its not having :)
