I was thinking of picking up some Samson C02's to use as drum overheads and perhaps for acoustic guitar too, anyone have any experience with these?

Since im on a tight budget i can't spend too much, but is there any alternatives to these that are also worth looking at?

thanks

mxl 603s. you can grab them for around $110 a pair (new) at ebay.

harvey (veteran pro and resident mic guru) recommends them and i have 4--i love 'em both on acoustic and drum OHs.

good luck! :)

I have a pair of C02's that I use a lot in my studio. I really like them on a number of things including overheads, acoustic guitar and piano. I've even used them (among other mics) on a choir without too much difficulty. They can be a little noisy on really quiet sources (although not as bad as some folks make them out to be), but I've found that they're fine for most everyday applications. They also have great off-axis rejection.

I've not used them before, but I believe the MXL 603's might be a better bet if you have a little extra cash because of things like noise.

The problem with the 603 is that they changed the designed significantly. IIRC, the first batch were good, but newer ones are not of the same caliber.

For acoustic, I'd probably steer you towards the Naiant mics. I can't think of any mics in that price class that I'd recommend for overheads since you'd probably prefer to have cardioid mics for that. I'd be curious what the Samson mics sound like.
