Can someone school me on the use of samples and copywrites.

What you can and cant do...

I was told bass lines and drum tracks could be Identical as the originals, I this correct?

What about looped voice clips and harmonies etc...

personally...

...I wouldn't trip on sample clearance. If you chop a beat up and change the rhythms, most of the suits at the majors wouldn't notice. Even if they do, they won't pursue litigation unless they find it financially worthwhile (mo' $, mo' $, mo' $). Show your skills at chopping up samples because you have to be able to do it all to make a name for yourself. Let your lawyer worry about the legalities. What's that you say? You don't have a lawyer? Well my friend, you've just joined the rest of free world. Our creed: F__ 'Em.

right in the ear.

holla.

What about small voice samples/clips from movies, tv, etc... in a part of a song?

Like say I wanted to loop "dear god I wonder can you save me" from Snoops Murder was the case for a hook, how does that work?

yo

sampling snoops vocals is all apart of clearing. the only way you wouldn't have to clear anything to my knowlege is; one, you don't give a fuk, two, you chop it up like o'l boy up top said so they can't recognize it, three you process it until they can't recognize it. that's just my 2 cents.

Great info, guys......

Keep up the good work. :)

soundalike

Look into soundalikes.... you can say the exact thing, or play the instruments the exact way, and it isn;t a sampling. Sampling refers to the SOUND RECORDING ONLY.... however , if you use someones words as a MAJOR BASIS for your song, u may be into copyright issues then
