i have many records in which have awesome sections i want to sample.. is it worth buying a second-hand AKAI s3000XL sampler for a few hundred bucks.. or is there software that is more cost effective?

PS: what is the storing capacity for samplers usually?

Are you using a computer for recording? If so you can create loops easily with any recording software or use something like GigaSampler or Rebirth for more advanced playback. If you want to trigger the samples in realtime you would be better off with a hardware sampler.

Tex, apart from the obvious, what is the main difference between a hardware and a software sampler? Also what are the main differences between expensive software like Gigasampler and others that can also play samples? Is it the managing of the samples? Ease of use?
Higher quality? More features?

Ya Tex...now you've done it...write an essay about it by noon tomorrow.

P.C. based samplers are good, offering the same options as outboards. However, if you are using your p.c, for recd'ing and mixing, wieghed down with var efx & sig processing plug-ins plus any addtl software such as Fruity Loops and the like, your cpu will be working extreme O.T. to support the load leading to the occasional system crash or other negative factors involved with and overworked p.c. system.
The Akai offers 64 voice voice polyphony,128Megs of RAM with 20 bit 4-chann efx proc'ing. You also get compatabiliy with the S6000
and var LFO's and envelops. Superior editing capabilities and other features tooooo numerous to mention. like the MPC2000XL,
the 3000 will provide you with near limitless opportunities for re-mixing and the like!! Great addition to n-e 1's studio!

Yep.

Also add sound libraries and file format compatability. On hardware samplers you have to check out max RAM, HD storage, SCSI, IDE.

I'm not really familliar with that many different samplers so I can't really tell you which one to get. If you plan on doing any live work than get a hardware sampler. Other than that get what fits your budget and looks cool. You might get some good recomendations in the keyboard or Computer forums.

Yeah, what is your budget!!?? I've used the 3000 on occasion
(not mine) and it's great for rap, techno or most forms of dance music. Since my style of moosic is comprised of jazz/funk/rock/r&b
(which I now catogorize all 4 as "Q-izm"), I rarely use a sampler.
At the present time, I own a Boss SP202 with 32MB SmartMedia card that allows me to sample up to 32 min @ rate of 44.1 all the way down to a grungy 23 with pitch,lo & hi filtering etc. efx with
sample editing features.Useful when I'm drunk and doing James Brown,Isaac Hayes etc covers. Got it @ $175.00 store display @ Sammy's!

Exactly what it's name refer's to! In it's simplest form, a sampler records anywhere from 1 sec to, say, 40 min's of a sound that was inputted into it.

For example, say you're listening to Aerosmith's "Walk This Way"
and want to sample the opening drum intro , you set the sampler
to record, "sample the drum intro and then press stop!
You have now "sampled" the 1st 2 or 4 bars of the drum intro
and can pkay it in quick succession, apply efx to it or whatever you want to do with it!

I am gonna buy a kick ass PC and think that I wont have to worry about the software sampler hogging my cpu, which ones are of the best software samplers out there, Gigastudio? REbirth? Giagasampler? What else?

Re- What else?

Vsampler from Speedsoft, it comes as both a vst instrument and standalone midi sampler, so u could build a pc just to run as a sampler but with the benefit of masses of storage. Its fast, loads samples into ram) , can use direct x and vst plugins and costs less than $100 for the professional version. There is a demo on their website-
www.vsampler.com
Download it and have a play, some people recon its better than any hardware unit... who knows, it might be.
