I'm looking around for samples I can use in Fruity Loops. I came across a five-star collection of string samples called Garritan Orchestral Strings. This collection works in two formats, it says:

"The New Standard in Sampled String Sections
for the GigaSampler® & Akai Format
Other Formats Coming Soon"

I don't understand any of this, except that Fruity doesn't work with either Gigasampler or Akai formats. Where can I find out about various sampler formats?

I don't know the types of files specific to your software but most all the programs will convert .wav files. Go to http://google.com and search. It's an incredible search engine for free samples.

Fruity just plays .wav files I think. Akai has become almost an industry standard.

I'm not sure what use Fruity Loops would be for playing back orchestral strings, though. If you want to do real sample instrument playback than you'll need a software or hardware sampler.

Tex is right.
There are:
.wav files
akai
gigasampler
AIFF
Soundfonts
and others that are specific to certain samplers. And some will convert the files to the type you may need.
This will require exstensive research on your part

Tex - maybe you know it, but Fruity's got this piano roll thing where you bung in a sample and it does piano notes up and down the scale with it. Very useful.

Stealth - thanks, that's useful knowing that. I checked out the Garritan samples I mentioned. $1000. Yeah, right. Why do they only do Akai and Gigasampler, I wonder? I thought wav was standard and very, very common.

Also, why don't they all use the same language? Too much to hope for, right?

If you just want techno type argeggios than piano role is fine but for doing realistic strings you really need to play them and add a lot of feel.

Almost all samplers read Akai so it is the closest thing to a standard format. Many libraries give you .wav files also

I was going to get Gigasampler but then I saw how much all the libraries are. You can easily spend 10x the amount of your sampler on the sound libraries. Another good string library is the Denny Jaeger collection. It is available in smaller chunks for a few hundred bucks for each CD.
