I'm thinking of turning my demo into a ep release with like 4 songs and selling it... but like 3 of everbody's favorite joints have samples and of course I cant sell it without sample clearence. So does anyone here know how to go about getting clearence from these companies.
You must contact the copyright owners (Publishing companies and Labels) which are listed on the record you sampled from.... You are going to have to clear the Sound Recording copyright (normally owned by the label) and the Compostion copyright (normally owned by the writer).....
I personally really wouldn't worry about this unless you plan to market this nationally or something on a large scale.....
My peeps who put out albums which had sold 50 - 60,000 copies ain't clear not one sample and they had distrubution Nationally and in some other countries.....
If you do deceide to clear though I have heard some are suprisingly very reasonable with the advances prices...... Expect to give up a lot of the publising on the song....
very true , sample clearance is not a big deal until the"music"gets major attention, then you better wacth out....there are services that can contact the publishing company of the artist you sampled for a fee (if you dont want to do it yourself)
there is also an option to buy out the copyright owner for the material you wish to use so.
If you wanted you could try to buy the rights to the entire song instead of getting permission to use a small part of it
Basically the song is now yours.....
