Sample and bitrate of Garage Band?

Hey there... this is my first post so far on the digital recording forum, I'm usual at Analog Only but now I come begging the enemy for help :D

So the situation is this... I'm recording my friends shoegaze project. We're doing drums and other basic tracks on tape, dumping the tracks to digital to do further overdubs and mixing. The thing is though that I'm only working with analog gear and only know the very basics in Pro Tools - unless I forgot them that is.
My mate want to mix the thing in Garage Band. I know, it's curious but whatever floats his boat and he's got great ears so think it'll be fine. I normally mix down from tape with a sample rate of 48000 and 24 bit. However I heard that Garage Band does only support 44100 and probably 16 bit.
So:

1. Does Garage Band support 48000/24? Want to avoid downsampling at all costs.
2. Does Garage Band support several inputs from a 16 track soundcard?
3. If not, any advice for a free program that does and works on Mac? In that case we'll just import the wavs into Garage Band later after digitising the tracks.
4. Does Garage Band support VST plugsins?

Hope you can help me out here or point me in the right direction.

Are you talking about GarageBand for Mac, or GarageBand for iOS?

This page seems to confirm what you said, but I don't know if the information is up-to-date.

I don't think GarageBand supports the VST format; I believe third-party plug-ins must be in the AU format.

Edit: You did mention the Mac in your questions, but I'm not sure whether that's because your friend is using GarageBand on a Mac, or because you're thinking of installing GarageBand on your Mac-- in which case, is your friend using the Mac version or the iOS version of GarageBand?

Edit #2: Since GarageBand is free, you could always install it on your Mac to see what it can and can't do.

Hi,
1: I don't use Garageband but I just fired it up and it defaulted to 24bit 44.1k.
Everything I run is always 24/48 and so it had no reason to do that, unless it's a limitation of the software.
I see no options in the software for sample rate settings - It seems to go from system settings, if possible, or default back to 44100.

2: Yes. The option needs to be enabled from default. Right click on the left hand part of any track, choose 'track header components', and tick 'show record enabled'.
Now you have a toggle per track. I didn't test 16 but I tested 9. If their limits are binary then yes, I'd expect it to do 16 at least.

3: Reaper.

4: I don't think anything on mac supports VSTS. Most plugs will have AU or AAX counterparts for OSX applications.
