I have been trying to record this amp I own, but it sounds - short answer - shitty. really hollow sounding. no matter what i try it always sounds that way once recorded, ie. changing the amp settings, mic placement, mixer eq, etc. My question is this: is it safe to assume that my amp is shit and i should use another one? This amp is just convenient becuase its always sitting there waiting to be used. By the way, im using an sm57 to try and record a yorkville amp.

It mostly depends on how you are hearing it. Does it sound ok coming from the amp? Assuming it is a solid state amp, you may want to trade up for tube amp. They generally have a warmer tone that would compliment your SM57 very nicely.

Are you getting enough/too much signal into your mixer?

if you like the sound of the amp before your doing recording with it then its not shitty.

are you using a direct out off the amp or micing it?

if micing it then maybe you need a better mic.

also if its just the sound of the amp you dont like and you cant aford a new one then try and get a tube pre amp that will fatten it up a bit.
