You have to try them out at your local store. I tried a 16" crash a while ago, didn't really stand out. I can't really remember what it was like. Hum... But they all can sound so different. I had a chance to play 3 x 20" Evo rides in my drum room, the difference was just crazy. One super dry with no bell definition, one louder and washy, and a quiet one which was pretty much a 20" crash. Only get what you can hear first.
I have an 17" crash. Pretty nice high wash to it. No real defined bell sound at all. I like the higher overtones. It is paired with a 16" thin crash and 20" ping ride Zildjian. Seems to play well with others so far.
