Anyone care to check out this mix? It's a cover of Sabbath's Hole in the Sky.

I've pushed the drums back from where they usually are, and pulled the vox up from the basement. Any and all feedback appreciated

The vox is too hot man...and the effects are overwhelming...
on the other hand...that guitar tone and playing are kick ass...
I think perhaps you should reverse directions on the vox and drums man...

Take it easy,
Joe

Heh thanks Joe.

Finding that balance is the tricky bit

^ What he said. Bring the drums upfront and push back the vocals. The guitar sounds alright.

Yup... Same as the above comments, although, sure there's quite a bit of effects on the vox, there were on the Sabbath original too, so it didn't phase me all that much. The one thing that I did pick up that bothered me a little is the drummer's timing. it seemed (to me anyway), that he wasn't keeping his timing right on the beat, but it could be the streaming I'm getting here as well. Great start all around though. LOVE OLD SABBATH!!!!!!

Tom

You're right there Tom. I'd like to blame the streaming but I always have trouble with the shuffle rythym.
General consensus seems to be pull the vocal back a bit, and we're just about there. Thanks for the feedback

you picked a serious tune off of my favorite sabbath album.. What a surprise!

it sounds live to me.. the guitars are lacking any power.. the drums have have timing issues.. the highat and cymbals sound louder than the snare.. the vocals are tough to pull off on this one.. Ozzy was at the top of his game for this album..

I don't mean to sound harsh but your comment of 'pull the vocal back and we're just about there' isn't exactly true.. The vocals need to be redone as well as the drums.. Probably the whole thing would need to be redone imop..

a good effort man!

I have a version of me singing this tune that was recorded on a 4 track.. When I borrow a 4 track from my friend maybe I'll post my version so you can rip me a new one! :D

keep it going!

This is one of my energy boost songs. Like when I'm running the last mile and I need to go to '11' i may kick this in on the walkman for a shot of endorphins.

I really like the guitar treatment under the verses. The rhythm section I have no beefs with. The solo is good too, i like that tone. I'm not so sure bout the vox tho. Even in the original i think some of the melody lines go a bit high for my taste, so it's hard to prevent a vox that is completely escaping from the mix especially in the 'hole in the sky parts'. Overall good job.

Guys, thanks for taking the time out to listen.

Khompewtur - Good comments. It's funny, the 'hole in the sky' part is the one part of the vocal I was confident with. The rest of it is around that dodgy flat spot cutover area where I find it hard to get power.

B. Sabbath - I was hoping you'd check this out. All your comments are right on the money. You can fool some of the people some of the time...
Timing issues aside, fact is the drums were recorded with 1 bass drum mic and an overhead condensor which picked up the hats and cymbals quite well, but the snare and toms less so. It didn't bother me too much though as Ward's snare in Sabbath Bloody Sabbath borders on the inaudible, so if that was good enough for Bill...
Good pick on the guitars too - they were recorded on a 10W practice amp. I don't know about redoing the whole thing though - I've got so much else to get thru haha.

I'd be really interested in hearing your version of this. That Gossip Machines instrumental you did blew me away

Hey i listened to your tune. The vocals need...awe screw it i am just going to repeat what was already said so i may as well shut up! Anyway you may want to try micing closer to the snare since you are only using a 2 mic setup. I would mic a couple feet above the snare almost in front of your face pointed straight down...this will pick up the toms better, and give you a bit more presence on the snare, while still keeping the cybals in the mics. A long long time ago i was confronted with this issue when i didn't have enough mics. I had some really good result this way. Just make sure your kick and snare mic doncause any phasing issues. I would use a touch less gain on the guits as well it could really beef them up.

(Sorry I've not been here lately. I've in the process of moving to an apartment so I now have 2 computers and I don't have internet access yet on my new place. I'm now in the 'old place' and I have only crappy headphones so keep that in mind...)

The drum playing sounds bad. I don't think Bill Ward was a drumming guru either, but this just sounds lacking. The guitar riffs in the chorus sound wrong. I'm not 100 % sure how it should be played but this just didn't sound right. I've just heard the original SO many times. The vocals could be good if there wasn't so much effects there. I can't really tell good enough with these crappy headphones. It's not a good idea to put the rhythm guitar middle (at least one of them is in center now, right?)

I really commend you on your choice or song to cover. You just didn't pull it off, sorry. Maybe *I* should release my version too, since I've made one. No vocals, though (so.. maybe not :D )

Sorry for sounding like a prick and digging hard to find the down-sides. I'm sure other people heard some of those too.

Ooooo...haven't heard this tune in a LONG time!

Well, I hear great energy in the performance. The recording needs a great deal of work. And it looks like you've been helped in that dept.

The vocals are tough on this, and you've done a pretty good job. Keep pushing.

SLuiCe, Analytical Man, CrankyOne, thanks for replying.

Yeh the drums are disappointing, both timing wise and sonically.

The more recording I do, the more I realise that without a solid foundation in the drums, the thing will never sound good.
With this particular track I feel if I'd got the drums right, some of the other idiosyncrasies would have been more easily overlooked.

It's great to get this feedback guys
