Running monitors from compuer and mixer?...

I recently came across a problem with Cubase where the only way I could get playback/sound is if I ran my monitors out of my mixer, not my soundcard, which left my soundcard unused (except for MIDI, but I haven't done much yet). So, after a little thinking, I came up with an idea to get sound from both my computer (through my M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard) and my mixer (Phonic Helix Board 12 Firewire). I'm 100% going w/ a pair of KRK RP6 monitors, and they have RCA, 1/4", and XLR inputs. But now, since the RP6's have both RCA and 1/4" inputs, I thought of an idea: I could run the 1/4" from the mixer and the RCA from the soundcard so I can get sound from both.

Would this work?...I'd love some opinions and idea. I made a picture to illustrate my idea, just keep in mind the one monitor is representing a pair of monitors, not a single monitor. Hopefully this will work, and I can get sound 100% of the time without leaving my mixer on when it isn't being used.

You may have already checked this but make sure the krk inputs are not either/or. Most will automatically cut the signal from one if another is plugged in. What in cubase keeps you from just monitoring out your card?

I suspect that it is because both the card and the Helix mixer are soundcards. I assume the firewire from the Helix is connected and that audio is being passed through that.

I have never used Cubase, so I am assuming that you set up a single device for it to use. If you choose the Helix then you have opted not to use the Audiophile.

Exactly. Because in signals going into Cubase are through the Helix, the playback has to come back out of the Helix...I wish it could come out of my soundcard, but it can't work. I guess I'll just have to try it to find out...

Hope it works for you.

The only other option that I can think of that *might* work (I haven't tried it) would be to load up Reaper alongside Cubase, connect Reaper to your soundcard and use Rearoute to route the audio output of Cubase into Reaper.

A bit clunky though!

Yea, that'd be a little too much work for me ;)

I'm gonna get the monitors soon, so I might as well just try it. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work :o

Why do you still have to use your 2496? Phonic can do the job... just to make sure to engage the "Firewire & 2T RTN" at the Control Room Source.

I'd prefer not to have to have my mixer on to get sound out of my computer...when I want to use the mixer, I can turn it on, but if I'm not using it I don't want to have to leave it on.

Not familiar with Cubase but in most recording software, you can choose which device you want the audio to go out to.

Are you telling me you cannot do this in Cubase?

I'm running Cubase LE (will be for a while, too), and when you select the inputs going into Cubase, they have to output out of the same interface. I think it's weird, hopefully I'm not the only one...It'd just be a lot more convienient if Cubase wasn't like that. Maybe it's just LE...

OK... simple get a AUDIO/VIDEO SELECTOR/SWITCH. I use it my studio with 3 selector. 1-PC output, 2-Mixer Monitor, 3-Mixer Main out.

If you are on a budget, pick up a Behringer MON800. It lets you bring in up to four sources, and send them up to 3 different outputs (two sets of monitors or headphones), has a talkback mic into the headphone mix.

For instance you can bring your mixer in (via RCA or 1/4") and your audiophile in and output them to up to three sets of headphones and your monitors.

I know most people here don't care for behringer, but this is one of there better bang for your buck products. It basically performs all the functions that a presonus central station does, only the central station costs $500 and the MON800 $39. Truly it is a no brainer for that price.

I bought one just to try out, and I use it every time I record.

Oh, ok, that looks like a nice little device. I trust Behringer stuff, just not mixers or microphones. My friend has a Behringer keyboard amp and it's awesome, this thing doesn't look that bad.

So basically, I can output my mixer to the back of it, and output my Audiophile to the back of it, and send both through the monitors? This may be worth investing in (if my proposed plan doesn't work).
