It sounds like you have a balanced mono input. You're screwed. You can't record two channels at once.

But what then is the need for having an 'input monitor' switch on the FastTrack which can be set at mono or stereo? Does this not suggest that the input can take stereo sources as well as mono?

I just downloaded the manual. What a piece of shit that manual is. It doesn't even have 'typical setups'. Have you tried plugging one side into the line in (which is balanced, not stereo) and the other side into the xlr? That would be your only hope. I'm thinking they may have designed it so you could play guitar(direct) and sing(throught the mic) at the same time. A lot of engineers think of a guitar as a mono instrument.

Look at the M-Audio Website, The line in is not a stereo in.
Plain and simple, Just look at getting a better interface like the mobile pre and you will be all set.

Dont know if this has anything to do with anything, but i was only getting sound out of one speaker when i ran my v-amp through the crappy sound card on my laptop. I accidentaly knocked the plug out of the line in about half way out and all of a sudden the sound came out both speakers. I dont have a clue about mono or stereo so its probably not what im sposed to be hearing but it sounds ok to me so im happy.

Let me guess, it was coming out of the left speaker.

Well the 1/8 adapter is stereo. The two cables from the v-amp are mono. Does 2 monos make a stereo? Im getting a firepod next week so i was hoping i would solve the halfway in cable problem by not having a pooy 1/8 jack. Will i still have the left speaker problem with my mono cables? Sorry if i bogarted someone elses thread. I didnt mean to get started on a whole new topic.

It depends if the adapter is stereo to (2) monos or stereo to (2) stereos.
If it splits it up to left and right, it should work.
If it is a 'Y' cord, it is designed to let you plug 2 headphones into one jack. That is the wrong adapter.

That must be it. I went to Dick Smiths (equivalent to Radio Shack i suppose) and they knew less about this sort of stuff than i do! I tried explaining what i wanted and even took my v-amp in to show them and that was all they came up with. Oh well, serves me right for thinking that using a line in on a crappy laptop sound card would do a good job. Less than a week til firepod time though (assuming bank loan gets approved)
