Running Line 6 Pod 2 in Stereo

I have a Line 6 POD 2 guitar amp modeller. It has left and right outputs and so far I've just been running the left output to the input of my M-Audio FastTrack USB audio interface and recording in mono. The interface only has one input so what would I need to run both of the POD's outputs into the interface so I could record in stereo?

I would presume you'd need to buy a new interface that has two inputs.

I can't think of any device or converter that would turn your stereo out on the POD to one input and then back to 2 seperate signals.

Well the 1/4" input on the interface was designed for guitar so I'm guessing it's a mono input. Any other alternatives?

I think your screwed man. You're going to have to get something with 2 inputs.

I'm pretty sure the input is stereo. From what I have read it is switchable, for guitars, or line input etc. I don't own one and have never used one. Just what I read here makes me think that...

It says 'switchable instrument/line input (1/4”)'. If its a 1/4" line input surely it has to be stereo

Ya know mabye your right. There is a stereo/mono switch on the from which would probably do the trick as I've always had it in the mono position for direct guitar recording.

So I need a little splitter like the one you got a link for and it should work?

Thanks for your help man

The pod only puts out a stereo signal if you are using the effects. Otherwise, the amp models are mono anyway.

Yeah, I figured that, but all my tones are usually swamped in effects so they just don't sound as good in mono.

Thanks

I tried a splitter but I think it may be a headphone splitter. It didn't work for me but I'm guessing, if it's a headphone splitter, it isn't suppose to work?

Look in your software, are there 2 inputs to choose from? If not, you only have one. No stereo for you!

You need a 2x1/4" mono jack to 1x1/4" stereo jack thingy. In your case with the POD its not so much of a splitter as a put togetherer. I was using the thing in the link I sent for a while to split the signal going from the single stereo out jack on my soundcard, taking the stereos left side and putting it into one separate mono channel and taking the stereos right side and doing the same. 1 into each of my monitors.

Those headphone splitters don't split it into left and right, they just duplicate the stereo signal into 2 stereo signals so you can use 2 pairs of headphones at once.

Alternatively you could build a little box to do it. You just need to make sure that the signal is split into separate left and right, rather than duplicated.

Sorry to burst the bubble again but that switch I think is for switching between stereo and mono Monitoring.
So that when you are recording your not just monitoring on one side but so you can hear it all balanced out to both side of your phones or monitor speakers. That is probably why your spliter didnt work (by the way it doesnt mater if its a headphone spliter or not as long as the tip ring and sleave send off to the right connections).......

Unfortunatly, you cant record stereo signals.

I would say if you like the Fast track I can honestly recomend the M-Audio Mobile Pre USB. Its nice and clean offers simular features and is reasonably priced.

Just a thought.

You do realize that if the tip goes to one end and the ring goes to the other end, it's not a headphone splitter. That is why a headphone splitter won't work.

What does the manual say about recording stereo sources? If it is this confusing, there should be an entire chapter in the manual about it.

The first thing to do is check the drivers in your recording software to see if there is a stereo option on the line input.

If the line input is only mono, and provided that the mic input shows up as a seperate input, you should be able to still do a stereo recording this way..

Left out from the pod into the line input on the M-Audio

Right out from the pod to a "DI" box, then into the mic input on the M-Audio

You can get a DI box for about 40 bucks, it will convert the 1/4" line level signal from the pod to be a mic level signal on an XLR jack.

If this works you will probably have to record your stereo sound across two seperate tracks in your recording program and then do a quick mixdown of them to get them onto one track.

:)

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'll have to find the manual and read about this. I figured the headphone splitter wouldn't work as it's not splitting left and right, just giving off 2 stereo outs.

Thanks again

Ok, I got a splitter. When I plug the two inputs in it gives a very weak signal when I am not using the stereo effects on the POD. When I am using, for example, delay, I can only really hear the delayed part and the actual part I'm is playing is very quiet. What could be causing this?
