I have the pleasure of having an 8-track (ready for 16) MX70 in my analog studio. My long search for 16 track heads and 8 channel cards finally was fulfilled a few months ago so I am now ready to try the 1 inch 16-track format! I already have experience running 1/2 inch 8-track Tascams so I have some idea what to expect from this new format. The thing is, I know just how awesome the 1 inch 8-track format sounds, so I would really like to have an easy way of swapping between 8 and 16 track depending on the session ahead.

Here's my idea, will it work is the question?:
On the MX70 there are two sets of presets on each channel card; one for low speed and one for high speed. My machine is currently configured for 15/30IPS operation and I will never stray from 15IPS. There are also two bias settings on the bias card which are switchable. Would it be possible to disable the speed control to the capstan but still maintain the switching between presets on the cards? Calibrate the machine with the 16T headstack in with "high speed" selected, then fit the 8T headstack and switch to "low speed" mode and cal the first 8 cards using the "low speed" presets.

Any thoughts? :D
