New to the forum today and need help with running two Laylas. Both have cards installed in slots but system does not appear to recognize 2nd unit. Does 2nd unit require Windows hardware update? Have Echo driver version 5.06 on hard drive. I have no experience with running 2nd Layla. Any advice?

Which Layla boxes...the earlier Layla24 or more current, and which OS?

I run three of the Layal24 boxes...not a bid deal to set them up.

Old stuff. Layla 20's and Windows 98. System has worked flawlessly with single Layla so far. Would like to get the 2nd one running.

How do I get (2) separate consoles "on screen" and run their faders independently? I tried a "clone" console but that mimics the original console's changes. I'm new at this so please bear with my questions.

Have you installed the drivers for the 2nd unit? I had 2 Laylas & a Gina all working at the same time with no issues whatsoever with both Win 98 & XP.

Rick,

Thanks for responding. I'm also running Cakewalk 9. I know this is ancient stuff. The driver for the 2nd card seemed to install okay but when I run create a session in Cakewalk, it only recognizes I/O 7 & 8 of the 2nd Layla. This is frustrating. I'm not sure now if it is a Layla issue or Cakewalk. This is my first experience with (2) Laylas so I don't really know what I'm doing wrong. I wish things would just work without a "glitch". The Layla manual says it can be done but does not provide any trouble shooting info.

Not sure if your Layla20 drivers are much different from my Layla24 (and it's been awhile since I installed my three Layla boxes)...but it wasn't complicated to install the Layla boxes at all. Mine are tied together via Word clock, with one being the "master", and that one gets its clock from the computer (again, the Layla20 consoles/boxes may be different). But the sync isn't going to matter just getting them installed...I'm just mentioning that once you do, you should sync them together properly.

One thing though...it's key how you set them in the DAW app. It sounds like both of them are installed, but the Cakewalk is not reading them correctly. If I recall, in my DAW (Samplitude) there is more than one option as to how I want each card viewed by Samplitude. Cakewalk may be trying to run the second card only as a 2-track, stereo card...so you need to dig deeper.

You may also need to work things on the Win98 side...let it use the on-board computer soundcard as it's default...don't let it use the Layla boxes.
But Win98... ...time to upgrade. WinXP should run that stuff without too much problem.

I agree about the upgrade. I'm just afraid of all the glitches to be encountered when doing so. My version of Cakewalk 9 was released back then for Win98. I don't know how it would react with XP. What I have so far (Pentium II-MMX and a 2 gig HD) has worked for small projects but I'd like to get into a more robust machine with a faster processor, more ram and larger HD for more elaborate recordings. I have a Dell 8200 that I'm considering to use as upgrade. Trying to make old gear work is not always smooth especially w/o factory support. Right now, I'd be happy to get the second Layla working properly. I'll dig further into cakewalk as you suggested and see what happens.
