Sorry for this ultra-newbie question. I've been working primarily with midi composition and have recently purchased an Edirol FA 101 unit along with a mic to work on some vocal recordings. I'm using these with SONAR 3 Producer. I installed the Edirol interface and it playbacks audio with no prob. My problem is to get it to record in SONAR. I've read the SONAR help manual about recording audio but am still not able to obtain an audio recording by speaking to my mic. So.... could someone PLEASE give me a rundown of doing audio recording in SONAR?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Mic ---> Preamp (or mixer) -----> sound card Line In.

In Sonar you have to set the track input to match where you are plugged into the sound card. If the sound card only has a single Line In input, you should see a choice of Sound Card 1/2 left, Sound Card 1/2 right, Sound Card 1/2 stereo (or something similar). Which one you choose depends on how you are connected to your sound card.

Set the track output to where your headphones are connected to. If you don't have headphones, you can use your speakers but this will create two problems for you: 1) potential feedback, and 2) your mic will probably pick up any sound eminating from the speakers.

After this, arm the track (click the record button on the track). If everything is correct, you should see an input signal on the track's record meter at this time. Press Record on the transport. Sing your ass off. :)

First, are you using a mixer or some type of mic preamp? If you are using a condenser mike you must have phantom power supply (standard on pretty much all mixers). If no mixer and condenser mike=no output from mike. Have you tried recording a line level source such as a cd player hooked up to input and arming the track and recording?

Thanks a lot guys!!! Yes, the interface provides a mic-pre and phantom power for my condenser mic. I FINALLY found the problem. I guess following the installation manual 100% doesn't necessarily mean that I can get the stuff to work with no prob. The problem lied in the driver I was using. The manual told me to "Choose "Use Default" or "WDM"" in the Audio Options in SONAR. I chose "Use Default" and received no audio input. Changed it to WDM and now everything works like charm!

Thanks guys!!! =)
