I learned a LOT based on my first thread here in the TASCAM forum, My Perfect 244. Deep gratitude to Dr ZEE and cjacek. The culmination was for me to purchase replacement belts (and possibly idler tire assemblies...if needed).
There's a possibility that the value of "vintage" analog audio gear such as the Portastudio 244 may be on the rise, so I wanted advice on how to store rubber components such as belts, in order to avoid or delay the deterioration that caused the whole replacement issue in the first place.
I found a neat online source of vintage audio parts in Colorado, trading as VINTAGE ELECTRONICS, run by a fellow by the name of Bob Toepfer.
Visit the Bob's Tips and Tricks page for a list of links to solid information on how to maintain your vintage gear (based on Bob's 35 years of experience). One of those links is How to store spare turntable and tape deck belts.
I'm not affiliated with Vintage Electronics in any way. I purchased Product No. 244 which is the "Tascam 244 Porta-studio Belt Kit" online today. $17.00 for both belts + $5.25 postage. Bob sells the US-made PRB brand rubber belts, which are first quality. I did a lot of research, and this is a GOOD DEAL.

In a nutshell: Do not freeze rubber belts; freezing can induce moisture. Keep them in a cool, dry location such as a basement - optimally at 40 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit and away from direct sunlight. Expect them to last eight (8) years. THANKS, BOB
