Ok, i have had protools for awhile, i don't even really like it much but now that i'm getting a hang of it, i feel like it's worthwhile to stick with. First, are there free ones out there, like vst's? And if not, what are some that you people find essential for vocals that are decently priced? I'm not sure how much i want to invest, i'm just getting started. I use pretty much the basics, eq and compression, a bit of reverb, nothing too crazy. THe protools ones work fine but the more the better.

You can download the Massey plug in demo's. They aren't full version but you can use them as long as you want and there are very few limitations compared to the ones you buy. Gives you a really great chance to see if it's something you might like to add to your collection. Also, WaveArts makes some decent inexpensive plugs. Other than that there really aren't many free ones out there, and the ones that are aren't really worth a shit.

last i checked, there was a demo version of sonik synth ii available.

personally, an essential for vocals is any version of antares autotune. even the pros use it.

ps: have more faith in protools, it is the best

I second the Massey suggestion, I just bought the whole set and love them. They are affordable too.

yes brother, have faith!

you will realize PT to be great too.

i was a lil disappointed with it so i bought cubase.. after using cubase, i love pro tools again. its incredibly powerful if you know where to click your mouse and what keys to hit.

mine came with a DVD which was awesome for starting out. pro tools method one or something, look into it, its a cool deal i gotta say.

btw, digi gives alot of plugs, you know that right? besides all of the standard ones, you get amplitude, reason adapted, melodyne essentials, sampletank le, and some others too. dont be afraid to have some fun too. reason is really cool.

Pro tools and free are rarely used in the same sentance

+1 for the Massey plugs. The EQ rocks.

I've been really digging Digi's SMACK! lately. Nice and dirty on a vocal track, or across a stereo drum buss.
