routing question

Hi-
So, I've been using the inserts on my mixer to send to tape. Then when listening back I'm coming from tape into the preamp. Then I thought why should I send my signal through the preamp on my piece of shite behringer twice? So I should come from tape and back into the inserts, right? Is this standard practice?

The tape returns should come back into the board through the line inputs on the channel strips.
