Routing on my board - am I doing it right?

I have a Behringer 802A, and per the advice of the Guitar Center sales guy, I have it routed as follows: (don't know studio-speak, using layman terms)

- Aux1 (pre) out to sound card (mono)
- From sound card in (stereo) to channels 7/8
- On 7/8, aux1 is closed (open would create feedback).

From what I'm reading, some people seem to have the main out going into the sound card (post).

Isn't it standard practice to send the dry signal (pre) to the mixing software (e.g. Cakewalk)?

Lots of learning to do, I am now 3 days into this stuff...

hi, I have a MX602 myself...

you can either use AUX SEND or MAIN OUT of the mixers... I think they are both post-fader.

The only advantage of using AUX-SEND is that you can feed in the rhythm music through your mixer and just record the channel you wanna record.... usually bigger mixers has INSERTs for this purpose, but this is a work-around for these smaller mixers....

I also prefer to connect my sound card out to TAPE-IN of the mixer instead of channels 7/8, this would free up my mixer inputs for other stuffs.... :)

Hope this help.

BTW, just a hunch, but are you of Korean descendant? ;)

On the 802, Aux1 is pre, Aux2 is post.

If I'm understanding what you're describing, can't you just accomplish the same thing with the faders/gain? You know, just killing the channels you don't want to record?...

And if I were to use the tape-in for the loop back from the sound card, I wouldn't have independent control of fader/gain for playback (arguably a slight inconvenience)?

Thanks for the response -

Oh, and, yes, I am Korean. :)

let say you have recorded a guitar track.... now you would like to add vocal while listening to the guitar track.

This can be achieve by playing the guitar track through your soundcard and record your vocal through the AUX into your soundcard.

if you use Main-out, your new track will have both the vocal and the pre-recorded guitar track in it....

I've been to Seoul a few times, beautiful city... lotsa guitars. ;)

Why would I want both the vocals and guitar back out to the new track? I want just the vocals on the new track, the one that I've armed in Cakewalk.

I don't think you're referring to monitoring, but in case you are, my inputs go straight to control/phone out via gains. So I can hear everything fine.

There is no one right answer. As you can see there are different options with different pros/cons.

If your mixer has individual channel inserts than that is the cleanest possible signal path and best way to send multiple discreet signals to the recorder.

But AUX's and BUSS's are fine also if you want to mix a few channels before sending them in.

This is my first post. I am having the same problem as this other person in my routing. I will record guitar from mic to mackie 1202 then send it out throuh 2 cords out the main mix to audiophile 2496 1/2 audio in on bus A in vegas pro. The guitar returns back to the mackie via the 1/2 analog out of the 2496 where I can monitor it through headphones plugged into the mackie. There is no problem up to this point but then when I add a bus in vegas and try to record on just that bus while listening to the guitar but the voice and guitar both get recorded. I want to keep the tracks individual. The answer might have been somewhere in the previous thread but I didn't catch it. Could someone spell it out for me in very simple english. thanks!

sheba,

to be simple, to record the individual track, record from the channel inserts instead of the Main-outs....

Leeking,
I finally found your post thanks for replying. Are you sayin that I can hook up a mic on channel 1 and go to the sound card from the channel insert? I am using both main outs right now I guess for stereo(???) into my soundcard right now. On the channel inserts I notice there is an in and an out how exactly is this configured? I'm very green. thanks!
