What does THIS button do?
What if I just put two sdc's on either side of my kit like 10-15 feet away instead of using overheads? Should I even try it? Has anyone done it? What kind of sound do you get?

A roomy one...lol. Does your room sound good acoustically? Try it if you want. The art of what we do is experimentation(ooft that sounds complicated for me, lol).

We tried experimenting a while back with a pair of SDCs just to see what it sounded like -- we tried 5ft., 10 ft., 15 ft. ... as well as overhead.
It might not be a bad way to get the whole band in a stereo recording situation, but I personally don't think it will give you the "sound" you're seeking for just the drum kit. You're better off with a single LDC in omni mode.
But don't take my word for it - try it yourself.
