Thanks to all for the advise on building my combination vocal-control room. I am now up and running again! It is now finished except for treatment but I don't want to treat it without some idea of what I am doing. I have attached three sketches I made with microsoft paint.
#1. Floor plan of room- finished with drywall walls and ceiling.
Rubber backed carpet on floor and on the soffet I mounted
my proto-J monitors in. (just for looks, I know it does
nothing for the sound) The only furniture I show is the
studio desk. The rest of the room has typical stuff, file
cab., small chairs, a five drawer chest to store some junk
NO futon, foton, heck NO SMALL COUCH.

#2 Cross section to show what ceiling looks like

#3 sketch of sound spectrum of white noise I recorded thru my
C-1 mic from my mixing position.

Questions!
Why is there a 10 db dip?
How can I determine if the room need treatment, what
treatment, and etc?

Yes, I have searched already and been to John's great site a zillion time. I just need to know what, out of his wall treatments to build.

Thanks,
Larry

attachment #3 White noise

I found out why my white noise attachment would not post, it's to big. Therefore I have zipped it. But it is still a bmp file. My studio does not sound good. Prerecorded songs sound ok but new vocals recorded in my new room sound bad, kind of hollow.

This white noise I recorded thru my C-1 mic from my mix position and played thru proto-j monitors.

any advise would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Larry

Larry,

A suggestion on the pic.

Use a photoshop type program and save the pic as a .jpg, instead of a bmp. The picture quality will be good enough, and it will download and open much quicker and easier for everyone.

changed attachments

Thanks to Bushice I have finally figured out how to change from bmp format to jpg. So I will try to post them.

I hope someone can help because my room sounds bad.

Thanks
Larry

Larrye - firstly you must treat that extremely close ceiling over the console. It will create standing waves around the frequencies that are missing (cancelled) in your white noise chart - 400 - 2K

cheers

John,
I can't tell you how much I appreciate and value your help!
When you say treat this area, what would you recomend? I understand some of the physics (I teach science) but, am ignorant of how to treat this area.

Thanks,
Larry

Larry,

In a thread of mine, John said this:

"you will find that the room modes fall into two areas - those below 100Hz and those in the low mids. You can tune slot resonators to the frequencies in the low mids. The ones below 100hz will need panel absorbers tuned to the freq. "

You have a pretty wide range of frequencies to treat - do you have anything in the room for sound absoption yet? If not check out some of the finished studios on Johns site. They show how they dealt with this issue.

Bushice,

Thanks for your input, I need to go back to John's site and study the theory more. I think I can figure out what to use. But I don't know how much (big) and WHERE to put it. Over the console, on the ceiling. I figure knauf fiberglass, 2" thick,4" thick? Do I need to cover this entire ceiling area?

I will study up on it and maybe John or some other acoustic expert can tell me more specifically.

Thanks,
Larry

When you go to Johns site, make sure you check out the submissions by Homerecording.com members, too. A lot of them have taken creative steps to design their studios, and you may also find one or two who are in a similar situation to yours, roomwise.

They also show how they deal with the studio walls in a wide variety of ways. Johns projects also show some great finished product pictures where you can see how they dealt with the room acoustics. It's a lot of pointing and clicking but well worth it!

Knauf fiberglass ???????????

John said I first need to treat the low ceiling area over my console first, so that I will do!
I plan on using Knauf fiberglass board, so I found a supplier and called them. They stock up to 2" thick but not in plain. They have FSK faced (silver) and ASJ face (white) in 3.0 lbs/cu ft (48kg/cubic meter). The SAC looks backwards. For the 2" ASJ that they stock, they look like this:

.75 @ 125 hz - .71 @ 250 hz - .80 @500 hz - .66 @ 1000 hz - .41 @ 2000 hz and .24 @ 4000 hz.

I said they look backwards. I guess this is due to the facing which is on one side only ? The spec of SAC on the plain are almost reversed.

How much of the low ceiling area should I treat ?

How many layers, 1 for 2" or two for 4" ??

Should I have the faced side out or to the ceiling ?

I sure hope you guys can help!

Thanks,
Larry
