Ok, so it's time for me to get into this :)

When talking about "rolling off", is this something that you use a gate to do by setting it to listen mode, or is there other ways of doing it?

If this is the common way to do it, can someone explain briefly what the difference is between rolling off with a gate and just cutting low end frequencies in EQ?

Also, anyone know if the dynamics included in Cubase is ok to use for these things? If not, is there any software dynamics plugs that can do a decent job, 'cause I just bought monitors and my budget is 0 for a while.

Sorry, many questions in the same post...

When you hear someone say 'roll off', typically yes, they're talking about eq.

Gating affects the volume of the sound or track where EQ affects the tone.

These are two very different functions in the world of audio --- volume versus tone --- and it is important to understand which one is used under what circumstance.

peopleperson is right when he/she says that the term 'roll off' is usually applied to EQ.

As far as budget goes, don't worry about it. Go to www.kvraudio.com and check out the effects plugs they have there. You can find a lot of functional plugs for free, everything from reverbs to eq's to anything else. Also, check out the digitalfishphones stuff, which they have on KVR. They are some really good (in my broke-middle-class opinion :D ) plugs! Good luck! ;)
