I bought a Roland XV-88 a little while back and I've been playing around with it. I compose orchestral and ambient (TangerineDream like) songs. Because I am just now ready to start recording digital to CDRW, or Hard Drive, I was wondering what all would best suite thius application? I have the XV-88 and I have a Compaq P-4 1.5 Gig processor with 352 meg. RAM. and a 60 gig HD. What sound cards, software - hardware etc. makes good sense? I really would like to produce high quality sound and eventually be able to mix with video, but audio is really my true passion. Can anyone give me a few pointers on how to start off?

The best value for the money in terms of a 24 bit sound card would be the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 ($160). I do not have much experience with other brands of software, but both Cakewalk Sonar ($300) and Home Studio 2002 ($70) allow you to record audio and work with video within the same program

On the computer side, what OS are you using? I am guessing you are probably working on a Presario PC and running Windows ME. If that is the case, you might seriously look into another OS. ME was the worst OS Microsoft has ever put out and many people who do digital audio either go with Win98SE or Win2000.

Operating System

I'm running the brand spanking new and incompatible with most off the shelf hardware Windows XP. I hope that the music software and hardware world is up to speed here?

So, If I buy one of these sound cards, then all I need to do is wire straight to the card? Computer? or do I need some sort of through box? I'm green as spring grass when it comes to the techie stuff as my only previous serious recording was with the miles of wire between reel to reel tape and analog mixer etc. I'm thinking that the wiring of computer recording has to be a little less complicated? Thanks for the sound card advice!

You just need to run cables from the outputs of the XV-88 to the Audiophile. The card has RCA stereo inputs as well as MIDI in and out.

I just recently installed XP Professional to test it out with my hardware. So far it does not seem to have problems with Home Studio 2002.

The Midiman Site says they have XP drivers available, but I would look around here as well as in http://www.audiforums.com and http://www.harmony-central/Synth to see what other people are saying about the combination.

The audiophile is a great budget card, but you would get a lot more mileage with a M-audio Delta 66 or Delta 1010. These two cards will last you a little longer as your needs grow and you become more skilled.
