Hi there,
I am a newbie when it comes to digital recording. I did some reel (Braun, Tascam, Fostex) a while ago with a band, but now I want to build up my own little studio.

I am very much interested in the new VS-890. I want a system that sounds godd and is somewhat portable. I will check out the VS-890 in the upcoming weeks, but my local music-store is not really helpful with infos.
So I wonder if someone out there can help me.
Some questions:

1. Can I use a non Roland CD-Rom-Writer for Mastering?
2. Is there a way to store the raw data onto the CD so tha one can record drums first (5 mics), the store the raw data. Mix down the drums so tha 6 tracks are free again. But still be able to get back to the raw audio signal of all 5 drum tracks?? And that by simply reading the raw data of the CD??

Thanks ever so much for any input on this!

Yours,
Dominik

Roland 890 & CD burner

I have a Roland 880 (and a question on this form about bouncing which no one has answered - someone please help :)

As far as using a non Roland CD burner everyone I have asked this too says you have to use the Roland CD burner - it has to do with the software they use. Apparently you can use the Roland burner with any other manufacturer - just not the other way around. I think it might have to something to do with how much they charge for the burner??????

The Roland CDR is manufactured by Plextor and many model Plextor drives will work with the 880. The CDR can be used for saving song data, and for burning audio CD's of mixed songs.

With regards to your bouncing question for the drums... sure you can!!! The VS's have eight "virtual tracks" for each recording track. While you can only play back 8 tracks at a time, you can store many different takes and submix to your heart's content without losing the original tracks.

What bouncing question wasn't answered?
