anybody out there using either of these units? i am currently looking into buying one and looking for some input on sound quality, ease of operation, mic preamps and any other info. thanks

Yo Swarm of 19:]

"EASE OF OPERATION...." hA! Ha.

There is a learning curve for either SIAB. I use the 2816 so it is very similar to the 4416.

But, I spent about an hour this evening going over some pages in the manual and found so much redundancy that I gave an "F" grade to the writers -- Nay, can't call them writers.

If you have PC experience, or are a techie, it's easier of course. Also, any experience with recording units of yore is another boost to understanding.

I can "get around" on the 2816 but, lots to learn. It would be simple if someone would come up with one of those, "Yamaha 2816 for Dummies," type book.

And, to paraphrase a famous newsman, "that'sa the way it goes."

hornet man...
i can probably figure out how to use the yamaha but what do you think about the sound quality of your recordings? are its mic preamps decent...locust

I use the AW4416. It sounds good. I've been using it for a couple of years with no external preamp and it does good. You have 4 position full prametric sp? eq, and fully adjustable compression on 8 different inputs. And you have two effects cards with all sorts of effects that can be used on the input source. (can also use them on the output) I'm looking at an avalon or something for an external preamp, just because it's Christmas time you know. I have a studio projects C-1, a couple of SM81's, 57's, shure beta kick mic, and an ADK 51s that I use into it.

AW4416 was a pretty substantial learning curve for me. But once you understand it.... the machine is layed out pretty good and it is really, really flexible.

Auto faders and you can store automixes..... fader levels and adjustments for effects and outputs, eq, panning etc for the stero output track. That part I couldn't live without. 8 virtual tracks behind 16 output channels is pretty nice.

Went through about 4 software upgrades. Yamaha mailed me disks as they became available. Very painless.

This machine is not the weak link in my sound. In fact it does much more than I need it to do right now.

Here are my two negatives. It only has phantom power on two of the 8 input channels. And you can't patch in a full size monitor. You're stuck with the one on the machine... (not that it's bad though).

Anything else you want to know?

Yo Locust:

Everything that JamMan says is about the same with my 2816. But as to the sound -- VERY GOOD as I'm sure is the 4416.

I use a couple of pre amps: Grace 101 and the older ART dual channel.

The preamps on the 2816 are all right but if you push them they get lose their mellowness. But, a little boost from them is fine even with an outboard like the 101.

Did an A/B test with the Grace against the pres of the 2816 and the Grace won hands down and faders up.

The reverbs by Yamaha are very good. I seldom use my outboard reverb boxes any more.

Happy New Year
