At which TD model did they start putting the direct outputs on the brain?

I know the newer ones have it.

What do you mean ? Do you mean general stereo outputs or a direct output matched to an input ? The TD6 had stereo outputs. The TD10 had 8 outputs.

I think the TD-10 was the first. A lot of the newer ones actually don't have Direct outs. The TD-8 was the least expensive one that had full v-editing and discreet outs. I once owned one. THey are an awesome module for the buck. I used one as part of my hybrid kit. It's limited as far as using it exclusively to play drums on(not much cymbal control), but as far as using it for an addition to a drum kit, or for your studio, it's pretty awesome. It was introdused as the economy version of the TD-10, which I believe Neil Peart still uses on his setup to this day. The TD-10 is a lot more expensive to find used, especially with the expansion chip added (increased cymbal control). The TD-3 and TD-6's sound very good, but are very limited as far as editing, and don't have direct outs. More for practice than anything. Not made for pro use.

The TD8 started the Direct Out trend by offering your Main outputs along with two Direct Outs.
Within the menus, you could assign each trigger to any of the 4 outputs.

I used to run Kick out of one direct, snare out of the other, and then create a digital overhead scenario by running the rest of the triggers out of the stereo outs.

I also used to own both an expanded TD10 that ran a Hart 6.4 kit and aTD8 that handled Hart multipad duties... Side by side, I preferred the sounds of the TD8 over the TD10. Just seemed 'richer' somehow...

That's interesting. I would have assumed they sound identical, or if one sounded better it would be the more expensive TD10. And I never knew the TD-8 was the first one with assignable direct outs. I need to buy another one of those for this new home studio project. I think I sold mine for about $350usd? What a great toy!
