Anybody remember these things? I saw one at GC today with a price tag of $550.00!!! I almost bought one about 15 years ago at a pawn shop for $35.00. The only thing that stoped me was I didn't know where to by new tape for it.

Used to have a 501. Got it after the 201 couldn't handle the signal level from the fx loop of my Boogie.

The 501 was really good, but I don't know how it would stack up vs. a good modern digital. I don't think you would be happy with it for recording (too noisy) but live it's probably still got the stuff.

It was a great piece of equipment - and you can make up your own 'new' tape by using regular tape and splicing it together for dirt cheap.

Although I'm a vintage gear slut, the Space Echo is something of a dinosaur nowadays. The modern digital FX recreate the sound better than the original ever did. But damn, they sure do look cool!

The Space echo sounded better than any delay I've ever heard when I tried it out. But, the price is just too damn high to justify it. Also, it had a sort of static noise to it sometimes.

space echo rules

the space echo rules! got one for $65 at workhorse guitars in Austin a few years ago and it's indispensible. contrary to what foo suggests, i'd be scared to take it on tour for fear of it getting banged around, stolen etc. unless maybe i had some great roadcase for it or something.

for recording, however it's awesome. sure, listening to a vocal track soloed with the space echo on it could sound a bit noisy, but in the mix it adds a nice little gel to bring stuff together. i've often used it with very little delay but just overdriving the thing to get some distortion.

long delays sound great on synths and stuff, and messing with the speed and regeneration while it's rolling, getting the delay to feedback, etc is NOTHING that can be re-created with new digital stuff.

find one!

Oh I found one. But as I said before, they want $550.00 for it and that's just too much.

Yeah, lilcapn - getting feedback and then messing with the delay time setting - instant 'Hendrxy' thing.

. . . and I had an Anvil case for mine, so no worries!

Dey was cool!

There is some Clash records where Mick Jones uses the Space Echo quite nicely on tape. Check out London Calling.
