Greetings.
Here's my set-up:
Pentium II 300mHz, 64M RAM, Cubasis VST, and my brand new Roland PC300 thru the USB.

While I was able to grasp the basic audio recording, now that I've gotten the controller i'm having difficulty with the VST stuff.

So far,I've gotten the keyboard installed and I'm getting sounds from the VST instruments,
but it's not Realtime -- there's about a 1-1.5 sec delay between the keystrike and the sound. This won't do for recording, will it? Do you think it's a RAM issue?
Thanks for your help. Nice Forum y'all got here.

VST Instruments

Hi,
it´s not only a RAM prob it´s also a CPU problem.
You should have at least 128 MB for good performance under WIN 98. It´s probably your CPU which can´t handle the VST Instruments. I don´t know which instruments you are using, try to decrease polyphony and samplingrate if possible.
The Roland PC 300 USB is it a midi Interface? I am not familiar with it...
The other thing is the Soundcard, it must have low latency
capable drivers for playing VST Instruments.
If it is the driver, there is a workaround.
Use the Soundcards or external soundmodule/source for recording the midi track, then select the VST instrument for playback.

Have Fun

Now I know, the PC300 is the only midi keyboard with USB
interface. Try to record midi and if there is no delay, i´ts the card and/or CPU.

I think your system is fast enough. I had the same problem, I have a PC 200 MkII controller. You dont mention what sound card you have but if it is a SB Live card you are going to get high latency as there are no real ASIO drivers. I could not use the VST instruments in real time either until I downloaded the APS Live Drivers. I now get 8 ms at 48000 mhz 16 bit. All the effects and the inputs are all pretty much realtime at that low latency. Prior to using these drivers, even some vocal inputs were a bit delayed. The new drivers are awesome. If you dont have an SB Live soundcard, then I have rambled for no good reason. Hope this helps.
