Hi all,
I have been looking for a midi controller and found the Roland PC-300. I can get it for 199.99 at http://www.musiciansfriend.com . Is it worth the 200 bucks??? Anyone tried it???

Thanks in advance,
Beathoven

(P.S.: I'm a rap producer, if it changes anything...)

Also...

... I was thinking about the OXYGEN 8 from MIDIMAN. I'm a rap producer so I don't need 88 keys to make a melody ;). The thing I fear is that it's using USB and I don't want to have latency problems. Anyone could tell me if I'll get latency problems with this setup???

- Pentium IV 1.5 Ghz
- 256 MB of PC133 RAM
- Audiophile 2496
- 30gig 7200 RPm

Don't think you need any other info...

Peace,
Beathoven

Beathoven,
Which operating system?
Which recording software?

Latency has to do with many factors.
WDM drivers on a Windows setup will help alot.
Win 2000, Win XP.
And recording software that can take advantage of them is required also. Sonar from Cakewalk comes to mind.
There is also options on the Mac as well.

There are other issues with USB regarding latency.
It's not so much the USB itself as much as it is the way the individual companies implement it.
I have a USB MidiSport 4x4 from MidiMan and it works fine for what I use it for.

Get a copy of Electronic Musician (Jan 2002)
In the Letters section there is a long letter and responce called
"To USB or not to USB"
That deals with exactly what you are asking about.

Good Luck and Keep on making music,
A1MixMan

I'm on Windows 98 and I use Emagick Logic Audio Platinum.

Where can I find that magazine? I'm in Québec and music magazines are not common here... Do they have a website?

Thanks in advance,
Beathoven

I'm interested in this as well all thought the Midiman may have to few keys (only 25). I'm looking for a 49 or 61 key controller. Mainly recording rock and blues tunes. Heres my current setup:

Duron 700/256mb ram
Delta 66
SBLive
Cakewalk 9.X

Oxygen 8

I have the Oxygen 8 - great piece of equipment.

You know that you can use it without usb, right? It has standard Midi in/out.

I've had no problems with it on my system using USB. I keep a pretty clean system, defrag regularly, and when i'm doing audio, i shut down a few services so as little as possible is running.

Win2k
P4 1.6
Asus P4B266, usb2
512PC2100
Audiophile 24/96
IBM 30 7200

I'll use it in combination with various software apps as well as:
Kawai k5000
Yam RS7000
MidiMerge 2x2
Alesis DM Pro
and sometimes a Roland 1680

can't say anything bad about it yet.
