Hello,
I have 3 questions about the roland jx-3p.
1. How do you use the sequencer?
2. Where can I find the calibration procedure?
3. My jx-3p seems to have a "muted note" problem.

As I play, a random note will eventually pop up that sounds more muted than the others. The note plays, but it sounds a bit lower in volume and the attack is softer. Then if I keep playing, up and down the keyboard, the "muted/low attack note" will transfer itself to another random note!!! And so on and so forth.
It does not bother me when forming chords, but it is slightly annoying when playing synth bass, where you can clearly hear the note constantly transferring itself to another note. SO.....my question is.....anybody know why this is, or having the same problem, or is this just how analog synths work, purposely randomizing the attack for a more realistic feel??
Thanks in advance to any and all help, and have splendid day!!

The muted note is a bad filter/amp chip. They are proprietary parts that Roland no longer supplies.

i had a jx-10 that gave away and now miss terribly. :(
anyway, are you sure that the "muted note" problem you're experiencing isn't supposed to happen? if you are playing a series of legato notes and the synth patch is monophonic, it won't trigger the attack portion of the note again. if you play staccato-- or at least release each key before pressing the next one, it should trigger the attack every time (although to less of an extent). every analog synth or emulation i've played has behaved the same way for many mono patches.
those roland synths could do either poly or mono-- does it happen with polyphonic patches?

also, the sequencers for this line are pretty primitive. iirc, you'll need a memory cartridge (smaller, but not dissimilar to an atari 2600 cartridge) to make it work. iirc they came in sizes of 16, 32 and 64 kb (yes that's right). iirc is basically a recorder with little to speak of in terms of editing. you'll be much better off using virtually any outboard or software based sequencer than the internal one.

been awhile since i worked on one of these so take with the proverbial grain....

the reason that the "soft note"seems random is that that is a six voice synth... and it rollsover from voice to voice as you play... so i'll bet that if you try it again you'll see that it is predictable.... every sixth note...

you may be lucky though... since the voice sounds the generator chip itself is most likely good... you'll have to find a service manual to get the calibration procedure....

My bad, I was mistaken about this instrument using that 80017A device. However the problem with it is still the same - a dead (or dying) voice channel.

Go there for schematics if you want to give it a shot. :)
