I've just purchased a Boss BR8 and my main instrument is the guitar.

I've got a very old DX synth. However, I want to buy a newer synth/sound module to provide good piano, orchestral sounds etc.

After much research I've narrowed my choices down to either: -

a. A Roland JV1010 & Evolution Mk149 keyboard, or
b. A Yamaha QY100 sound module.

Ideally I would like to have a sequencer. I understand that the QY100 has a 16 track one built-in. However, my understanding is that this isn't the case for the JV1010.

i. Can anyone recommend a good stand-alone sequencer that's compatable with the Roland, or
ii. Should I forget the Roland and just go for the Yamaha?

Your collective advice would be much appreciated.

Kev,

Why buy an Evolution Mk?? If you have an Old DX, you should be able to use that as a controller for a sound module.

No, the JV 1010 has no sequencer. You can easily get a
cheap or free software sequencer. If you do not plan on
using a computer, steer clear of the JV1010; it is easy to use with a computer, practically impossible without one.

The JV1010 sounds awesome, I have not heard the Yamaha. Good Luck, Dave

I agree with DavidK. I have the 1010, and I keep it hooked up to my PC. It does have some great sounds in it though!

I've got the JV1010, and NEVER use it with my computer. But that's because I really hate computers.(software-job...) I just have it around as an all round box. Want an organ, organ it is... Bagpipes? no prob.

I really like the organs in it. Piano, wurly, rhodes, clavs and vibes in my A90 are way better...

My friend has a QY70 (I think, predecessor of QY100). He did some cool tracks with it. You can get some really freaky synth stuff out of it. (Can't do that with the JV1010, as far as I know.) Don't like the drum sounds in it, but I haven't compared them with the JV1010 yet.

One thing I would dig in the QY70 (or QY100) is it's size. You can easily take it with you and play it as a gameboy-for-freaks... What I HATE about it (QY70) is the stereo 1/8" output. Why can't they put in ordinary jacks?? Don't know if the QY100 also has this...

I've been thinking about buying me one of them little boxes too. But having the dude come over and program it for me is way easier.

If you want to hear a tune with that sequencer: this one is made entirely with it, a sampler for the delayed guitar riff, and overdubs for vocals and guitars. (It was recorded to tape using ONLY the sequencer and sampler, than recorded to HD, and overdubbed.)

Many thanks to David K, Hard2Hear & Roel,

David, it never crossed my mind to use my DX as a controller keyboard!!!! That's how MIDI-illiterate I am. Consequently, you may have just saved me £100.

Ideally, I would like a hardware sequencer to plug straight into my BR8. Size is an issue in my small studio set-up so it's looking like I'll buy a QY100. I'll pop along to my local music shop and ask them to let me hear the sounds from both units before I make my final decision.

Anyhow, once again, thanks for your advice.
