Roland GI-20 GK-MIDI INTERFACE

On Tuesday I just recieved my new Roland GI-20 GK-MIDI Interface bundled together with the GK-2A divided pickup.

MY STEPS FROM MANUAL:
1) I installed everything correctly as the manual says.

2) Installed the drivers on my computer from attached CD ROM.

3) I opened Digital Orchestrator Plus.

4) Opened a midi file I created called: "Roll Over Lay Down" by Status Quo.

5) I Setup the new track for recording to record the leadbreaks from my electric guitar (that's now setup for the above).

6) I recorded the intro to the song and checked it before going any further.

7) I viewed the leadbreak in Piano Roll and found a whole lot of garbage notes along with what I recorded.

8) I changed the MIDI CHANNEL MODE on the GI-20 from MONO to POLY.

9) I then re-recorded the intro of the song again but when in piano roll view, it's still the same.


I have set the sensitivity to each string to high (when first setting up the guitar).

Attached to this post is a screen shot on how it looks in piano roll view.

Any help would be very much appriciated.

Unfortunately, this is often the case with guitar synths.
You can try bringing your sensitivity down, but, I think it's going to take some technique alteration before you're happy with the results.

You have to play _extremely_ cleanly to avoid all those skanky notes that you don't want. And it takes a while. Try damping the unused strings with the heel of your hand - that may help as well (but it will also interfere with the vibration of the strings you are playing - reducing the effectiveness of the divided pickup).

I've been using my GR-50 for nigh on 10 years now, and if I haven't played it for a while, it will take me at least a couple of hours to build back up the technique (especially if I've been playing my acoustic a lot - sloppy sounds great on acoustic )

I've had a lot less problems with my Godin LGX-SA, than with the GK2A. It is less likely to pick up crap from other strings.

Good luck - and work on it - you WILL be happy with the results eventually. And you can always edit out what you don't want - I still have to do that.

Yup - for the convenience of triggering midi with the instrument you're used to playing-on (guitar) as opposed to having to use a keyboard, you sacrifice a lot in terms of response.

Follow Mike's suggestions - playing technique, sensitivity on the pickup - all will help make it easier - but don't expect it to ever be as responsive as on a keyboard.... and be prepared to do a fair amount of midi editing!

Attached to this post is the zipped version of Roll Over Lay Down by Status Quo. Hope you enjoy as much as I enjoyed creating it from scratch. I had to create this file as it was unavailable for download at any website.

Do as you please with the file and pass it onto others that may find it useful.
