I'm new to home recording and have a silly newb question (bet y'all never had one of them )
First of all, I like island/trop-rock music and I am going for that sound.
I just want to record me playing acoustic guitar, some vocals along with some congas, my cajon and some steel drums.
I'd like to keep the recording process pretty simple or at least not tedious.
I've been eyeing the Tascam DP-008EX and am just about to pull the trigger, but today I saw the Roland Cakewalk V-Studio 20.
I see lot of videos with people playing electric guitar and laying down vocals, but no one miking up any kind of drums.
It seems to be geared towards electric guitar players but can it also be used it as a recording studio for what I want to do?

Neither. Look at the bit depth and sampling rate differences kind of rules out the Tascam. The VS-20 only has two input ports to the computer and is a bit behind on driver support. I think that both have or are in the process of being discontinued.

If you don't mind discontinued items, check out the sale on the VS-100 at Sam Ash.

Determine how many inputs you need. Get something with 24 bit capability.

Glen

Thanks Glen.
You're right. The Tascam DP-008 is discontinued but the DP-008EX just came out.
There's one guy on youtube that recorded a whole album on the DP-008 that sounds great and there are so many other videos with songs made on them.
I recently heard back from a guy who told me the VS 20 would be fine for what I want to do if everything is miked good. Of course, he probably works for them.
Since it's just me playing, I'm guessing I don't need many inputs? I've heard that both the VS-20 and Tascam have pretty good internal mics.
Maybe it's back to the drawing board for me. I'm in no real rush, so I'll keep looking. Just looking to keep it rather simple and under 300 smackers.
The last time I was in a recording studio was 97 and it was all hands on, so I'm looking for something similar to that without too many menus to navigate through.
I have not looked into the VS-100. I'll have to do that.
Thanks for replying.
