hey all, i'm new to this , but i recently bought a roland 840 off ebay, i had a yamaha anolog 4 trck, and thought this sounded like a great way to get more trks, i know its an older machine, but my problem is, i record about 4 tracks , one at a time, and when adding the 5th trk its telling me memory disk full,? its only a 6 minute song and i'm already out of memory ? they advertised this machine handling up to 200 songs and 64 trcks, does anyone have any help, i called rolands help desk and the guy i talked w/ treated me like i was an idiot, and said there was nothing more i could do, thanks for any help

Do you have the 100mb or 250mb zip drive?

250 is preferable obviously for more space. I can max out a 250mb disk depending on how many virtual tracks I use.

Are there any other songs on the disk? Delete what you don't need or buy new disks if you can't get rid of the old stuff.

Have you "optimized" the disk? Because of the undo feature, even when you are recording over an old track, the previous track info is still retained...to re-claim that space you need to "optimize" the disk. This will give you back space.

Beware of "optimize further" though...some people have lost data using that. Just hit no, when it asks "optimize further".

The recording mode (MT1, MT2, etc...) will also effect how much recording time you'll get...The higher the quality, the less time you'll have. I use MT2 as a general rule.

There's another BBS dedicated to VS recorders, the VS-Planet...lots of good info there:

Good luck,

Wish

Wish, thanks for the help, its only 100 zip,but i'll chk out the mt2 ,cause i don't know which one i'm using, also i did optimize a lot but did'nt help much thanks dan ps i'll chk out the other site you gave me , tghanks again

No problem...

One other thing to check out on the VSPlanet...a bunch of the 840 guys have replaced the zip drive with hard drives (for about 50 bucks or so)...do a search there...

You could also upgrade the zip to 250 or 750 mb as another alternative...I think you'll also need to upgrade the VS operating system as well to support other drives than your 100mb zip...downloads are free on the Roland web site and can be updated via midi.

Have fun!

I also have Roland 840 and the quality of recording is excellent, usually when the memory is full try to make ( Obtimize) anyway I knew that it is possible to change the zib drive and to add an extarnal one that would be able to use ZIB DISK 250 but I don't know who could make this job, perhaps experts who work with computer. IT'S ALIVE!!!!! The thread died a year ago, and it came back!!!!!!

I have had an 840 for a long time. I used to read the VS Planet all of the time. I put a notebook hard drive in mine and have had pretty good luck with it. There's a little noise, but not bad. It gives me like unlimited recording space at the best quality level.
