i need feedback on the upgrade for the roland 840, how much it costs, if its worth it , and where to get it done in so. cal. los angeles. If i get the upgrade, can i hook up a 840ex and literally have 16 tracks, i'm not sure if it will work that way or not, should i get a 840ex or move to the 880 and why----thanks! Cj

i would recommend moving to the 880ex - it is a dynamite machine for the money. recording to the hdd instead of a zip drive is much faster, the ada converters and recording bit-level are the same as the 1680, and you get nice mastering patches - but most importantly, you can use the cd-rII and burn cd's straight from the recorder. go visit vs-planet - http://www.vsplanet.com/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi and do some reading - it is a great forum.

thanks jnorman, the thing is i already have a 840 if i get the 880 and do the upgrade can i patch the two together. i dont want to waste the 840 how do they resell?

Hey Carl,

You dont need an upgrade, just go and visit Rolands website. They have synchrenization guides for all there VS units as well as quick start guides and it shows you how to MIDI synch an 840 to an 880 with a MIDI cable. :)

Another option to think about, if you have a computer that can handle it, is to combine the 840 with your computer and get the best of portable recording using the 840, and easier editing on the PC. I thought the 880 I have was easy to work with until I started transferring all my mixes to SoundForge. Now I can't stand using the 880 for any editing functions. Plus you could then burn CDs right from your PC with a much cheaper CD-RW than the Roland one. For the price of another 840 (or 880)and that upgrade for the one you have now, you could get a pro level soundcard with multiple I/O channels and software for the computer. If you want to save as much money as possible, using a soundcard as cheap as the SB Live and downloading software would work. Just another suggestion.
