I just got a Rode NTK. The condensor mic I had before needed 48V phantom power to work. I bought a preamp for it. Now that I have the Rode, I'm not sure if it needs a preamp or not. I'm thinking it won't need phantom power because it came with a power supply but, is that power supply also the only source of preamplification i need? I'm recording into the Yamaha AW4416 and when I use thr Rode without the preamp, I have to turn the gain waaaay up to get a decent level. Then I tried to use my cheap little Bellari preamp with the phantom power turned off. I got a louder vocal track but also a little hum. Anyone familiar with this stuff?

well alrighty then

On a $400 US budjet, Is there a decent mic pre available with 2 channels. I'll look for one with a good relationship with the Rode NTK

HHB (TL Audio) Has some pieces tha combine a pre amp with different stuff ( eq, compressor) All ca n be had on ebay for $300-500. I have a radius 50 and while it is not clean I like it and use it a bunch. I think its a piece that even though later you will upgrade, you will always have uses for. I aalso use a focusrite VMP and a Toft atc-2 so I have three quite different sounds available. Buy something you will use in the future, not just something cheap you will use until you buy something better

Pre

I bought a Presonus Eureka from guitar center yesterday. It also combines a pre/compressor/eq. It sounds good compared to the bellari I was using before but I don't have anything else to compare it to. This Presonus is literally the second pre I've ever used. I paid over $500 for it and I still have 30 days to return it. So, do u guys know of any better ones out there in the $500-$600 range? A ales guy at G.C. was recommending a Focusrite pre for $100 more. I forget the model but it had compressor/eq and also a de-esser. I'm still trying to decide. Help?

It is a VMP and I use it with regularity. The chinese pots are the only weak link that I can spot. It has expander, vintage eq, compressor, tube warmth( for chess), shelf eq, and de esser.
Also latency free monitor, and variable pre amp attenuation
Nice Piece for the money

I've never used it or anything, but I know a few people on here really liked the SafeSound P1. It's available at www.frontendaudio.com and Warren from Front End posts here frequently.
