Rode NT4 for Drum Overheads

I'm thinking of picking one up, but I've heard mixed reviews. I think some people don't find the stereo spread of the x/y pattern in general 'wide' enough. I don't think it's a question of Rode's quality. I have say, when it comes to drum overheads in rock mixes, some people take the stereo effect too far, to the point where, while it might be neat to hear one crash way to the right and another way the the left, it's simply un-natural, when you consider where you would actually be positioned if you were listening to the source live. Anyone out there have any experience with the NT4 on overheads? What say you? A good purchase?
 
if you don't want to be stuck with the x-y config. of the NT4, snag a pair of NT5's...same capsules/electronics, but in 2 mics
 
Thank you Ironklad A. I have a pair of Line Audio CM2's, which I would say compare to the NT5's, and have used them as OH's in various configurations. Can't say I've been disappointed with the results. But, I would like the convenience of simply hanging an NT4 over the drums. I guess the width of the stereo image would depend on how close the NT4 is placed- challenge to find balance between width vs. centre hole.
 
You could get the pair of NT5s (I have them, and they rule!), and get a stereo bar for anytime you need to put them both in X-Y with a single mic stand.
I was also checkint out the NT4 before I bought mine, but the NT5 are waaay more versatile.
 
i've owned both the nt4 and an nt5 matched pair (albeit fairly briefy both times). to me the advantages of the nt4 are that it's in a fixed, accurate x/y stereo pattern which makes for quick setup and it can be powered by battery for field work. the nt5's are defintely more versatile in terms of stereo miking, but obviously you'll need an extra mic stand. another advantage of the nt5's is that they can make use of the omni capsules that rode released for the sd nt series, whereas they are useless on the nt4 because of the fixed xy pattern.

Thanks for your input guys. I'll consider the nt5 matched, although I don't know that they are any better than my CM2 pair. The issue I had was not finding a good stereo stand/adaptor. I'll definitely pick up the A27M.

the a27m is really handy. what's your budget for overheads? there might be better things out there depending on what you can spend.
